Greenthief – Retribution (EP)

by

One thing is certain about Greenthief’s latest EP, Retribution and that is that it’s certainly unique and diverse in every regard.  From the, progressive, psychedelic and experimental musical overtones, right through to the CD booklet featuring a story about two little pigs..or is it a story about two little pigs?  On this their second EP, the Brisbane, Australia based trio, over five songs, take listeners on a wide ranging musical journey and that might very well be in the space of just one song!  If you are into anything remotely such as the likes of Muse to Regurgitator to The Mars Volta to The Smashing Pumpkins to Pink Floyd to Jeff Buckley to Radiohead and everything in between, then Retribution is well worth checking out.  The trio recorded the EP with British producer Steve James (Sex Pistols, The Jam) and they certainly know their way around their instruments with some excellent musicianship, no better evidenced than throughout the 8.41minute closing track Mayan Dawn.  The style of rock delivered by Greenthief isn’t exactly a highly accessible one, it may take a good 4 or 5 listens to really appreciate what’s going on here, but for all there is to take in, the songs are delivered with a certain sparseness and space, as opposed to a state of chaos and confusion.  As an independent release and having already attracted attention via Triple J Unearthed and the Queensland Music Awards, I can certainly anticipate this EP generating a high level of label and listener interest.  Without doubt a band that I think we shall be hearing a lot more of in 2012….
