PERTH BIG DAY OUT

As always, the BIG DAY OUT is ever evolving. We continue to support local musicians, DJ’s and artists in every city, making each BIG DAY OUT a unique experience.

It’s not just about bands. Hitting the custom built 40 foot Big Day Out touring skate ramp will be some of the hottest skaters on the planet right now. Plus, thanks to our partners Motorola, we also have one of the largest inflatable waterslides in the known universe – the Motoslide! Both will be featured in all cities so bring your togs, bikinis and kneepads, as you are in for a wet and bumpy ride. There is always more to explore at the Big Day Out.

The Big Day Out prides itself on presenting the best, most outstanding artists in the world, and our second round of acts is no exception.

There are plenty of debut artists joining the BDO circus, from the never compromising Noel Gallagher, to the thunderous Nero performing live in Australia for the first time. From Brazil’s Cavalera Conspiracy, to the UK’s newest rock darlings The Vaccines, there are plenty of new pieces to complete the BDO puzzle.

So let’s roll out the second round of artists to complete the picture:

NOEL GALLAGHER’S HIGH FLYING BIRDS NERO (LIVE), THE VACCINES, BASSNECTAR, CAVALERA CONSPIRACY, REGURGITATOR, DRAPHT, KIMBRA, BLUEJU!CE, TONITE ONLY, ABBE MAY, SHOCKONE, THE GROWL (triple j Unearthed Winner)

For our 20th year we have chosen to rebuild the Perth event from the ground up, with a goal to recapturing the magic of early Big Day Out shows.

Triggered by the need to change venues and the limited space available at our new site we have decided to look back to see the future for BDO.

We are not just moving the show to a more suitable venue but changing the entire design. We are excited the bands are into the idea and we know you will be too.

One main stage, no D barricade, Skating & Skate stage in the main arena, Green stage, Boiler Room, Giant Water Slide, Show ‘N’ Shine and much, much more! Plus it’s now a little cheaper than the East Coast Shows, with booking fees included.

However, the need to reduce from two to one main stage means several acts from the first announcement will not be able to perform in Perth.

Unfortunately Hilltop Hoods, Mariachi El Bronx and Kanye West will not be appearing at the Perth Big Day Out and we thank them for their help, support and understanding.

This means for Perth it will be: NOEL GALLAGHER’S HIGH FLYING BIRDS, NERO (LIVE), THE VACCINES, BASSNECTAR, CAVALERA CONSPIRACY, REGURGITATOR, DRAPHT, KIMBRA, BLUEJU!CE, TONITE ONLY, ABBE MAY, SHOCKONE PLUS TRIPLE J UNEARTHED WINNER THE GROWL.

Who will now be joining: SOUNDGARDEN, KASABIAN, MY CHEMICAL ROMANCE, THE LIVING END, BATTLES, ODD FUTURE, GIRL TALK, PARKWAY DRIVE, RÖYKSOPP, FOSTER THE PEOPLE, THE JEZABELS, ARCHITECTURE IN HELSINKI, THE GETAWAY PLAN, CAGE THE ELEPHANT, FRENZAL RHOMB, BOY & BEAR and BEST COAST.

Plus the Tony Hawk BDO Vert Jam lineup has now been confirmed and we are stoked to announce that joining Tony Hawk will be vertical visionaries: Kevin Staab, Sandro Diaz, Jesse Fritsch and Neal Hendrix.

Also shredding up the Big Day Out ramp are the newly formed international dream team The Kings of Vert featuring Elliot Sloan, Alex Perelson, Renton Millar, Juergen Horwarth and Sam Beckett.

Hold on there’s more! Here come the Legends of Vert featuring Trevor Ward, Mick Mullhall, RJ Barbaro, Nathan “Jimmy” Beck and Adam Luxford who skated at the very first 1992 Big Day Out.

MORE ON THE SECOND ROUND OF BIG DAY OUT 2012 INDUCTEES:

NOEL GALLAGHER’S HIGH FLYING BIRDS

As the driving force behind Oasis he did everything you can do in music. But never before has NOEL GALLAGHER played BIG DAY OUT – that all changes this summer when NOEL GALLAGHER’S HIGH FLYING BIRDS make their Australian debut.

For the past two decades, his songs have stitched themselves into the fabric of our lives. And GALLAGHER knows it, swearing to never let a gig pass without playing a few Oasis classics. “I’m proud of them and of what they mean to people.” Therefore, NOEL GALLAGHER’S HIGH FLYING BIRDS will be bringing not only their brand new material (“the best collection of Noel Gallagher tunes since his ‘Morning Glory’ days” – The Telegraph****), they will also bring a host of the some of the most loved rock anthems of the last 20 plus years; classics like Wonderwall, Don’t Look Back In Anger etc will feature in the set.

“Right now I’m more interested in something that’s a little more intimate and human,” he recently told Spin. The High Flying Birds recent debut shows in Europe saw “A second coming, powered by an elated crowd having titanic moments on the balconies and singing every word” (London Evening Standard ****). Clearly Noel is connecting with the crowds in a very big way.

Bear witness to a legend finding his feet in a whole new realm as NOEL GALLAGHERS HIGH FLYING BIRDS lift off at BIG DAY OUT 2012.

NERO (FULL LIVE BAND)

Why wait to see what the future holds? The future is now. The future is NERO. London dubsteppers Daniel Stephens and Joe Ray have bassquaked clubbers into devoted submission with dancefloor- shuddering singles Act Like You Know and Me & You – lifted from their killer debut, Welcome Reality –

plus poptastic remixes for The Streets and Beyonce, and DJ sets that shake heads in disbelief. But it’s their brand new, full live set, complete with vocalist Alana Watson, that will transform the Boiler Room in a vision of some rock’n’roll-meets-sci-fi-back-to-the-future. Backed by live musicians and performing atop a podium built of ghetto blasters and arcade games, NERO deliver “a massive experience” (BrigNewspaper.com). Fire up the flux capacitor and set a course for NERO at BIG DAY OUT 2012.

THE VACCINES

BIG DAY OUT is proud to announce the arrival of a breakthrough discovery in the modern science of rock’n’roll … THE VACCINES. Not yet two years old, this four-piece has raced from fervent whisper on the London indie scene to full blown hype courtesy of their first singles, If You Wanna and Wreckin’ Bar (Ra Ra Ra), while their first live shows earned them tags like “indecently exciting” and “game changers”. With their March 2011 debut album, What Did You Expect From The Vaccines?, packing DNA from ’60s pop to the dirty fuzz of The Jesus & Mary Chain, and a live show The AU Review called “no-bullshit-just- rock”, THE VACCINES are heading to BIG DAY OUT 2012 for one hell of a good time.

BASSNECTAR

This adventure has no rules, no limitations and no hesitation in fusing the familiar with the strange or the classic with the cutting edge. It’s a combination of sound, force and weight and this my friends, can only mean one thing, put your hands in the air as we welcome BASSNECTAR to the BIG DAY OUT 2012. This is the brainchild of Lorin Ashton and it exists as an open-sourced musical project that is as diverse as it is heavy, as raw as it is meticulous, and as fierce as it is imaginary. Spanning the spectrum of sonic style, the music covers every genre imaginable and smashes it all into a synthesis of intense, wobbling basslines and hypnotic soundscapes. Described as the ‘festival king’ (DanceFever5000) BASSNECTAR’S show brings a wall of sound and light show to match. BASSNECTAR energizes audiences with an experience unlike any other, BIG DAY OUT 2012 punters take note – this is one set you don’t wanna miss!

THE AMITY AFFLICTION

Injecting some young blood into the BIG DAY OUT field are Queensland metal-core outfit THE AMITY AFFLICTION. Since the release of their second album, Youngbloods, in 2010, which debuted at an impressive No. 6 on the Australian Album chart, the band have been riding the wave of success and doing what they do best – taking their unique blend of melodic hardcore, to the people. Touring extensively overseas and at home, THE AMITY AFFLICATION always deliver the positive message of their recent offering – that no one is alone, and everything is fixable. If you haven’t experienced the powerhouse of these guys live BIG DAY OUT 2012 is your chance to be afflicted!

CAVALERA CONSPIRACY

BIG DAY OUT 2012 is bringing back one of the most infamous, revered names in modern metal – but not as you know it. From the brothers who brought us Brazil’s biggest export, Sepultura, comes CAVALERA CONSPIRACY. The hyper-charged attack, fierce riffage and percussive bombardment is still there, but this is “more brutal, more in your face,” says singer/guitarist Max Cavalera. He’s joined in CAVALERA CONSPIRACY by brother Iggor Cavalera on drums, Marc Rizzo (Soulfly) on guitar and Johny Chow (Fireball Ministry) on bass. Their second album, Blunt Force Trauma, is pulverizing metal with punk attitude. On stage, it does exactly as the title suggests: “Each drum hit sounded like a signal for the apocalypse, while Max’s thunderous roar ripped through the din” (ArtistDirect). Stepping out of the shadow of a legend is not for the faint-hearted… CAVALERA CONSPIRACY know no fear. Start shaking in your boots now, BIG DAY OUT punters.

REGURGITATOR

It’s been quite a few years between drinks for REGURGITATOR but their recent long player, SuperHappyFuntimesFriends, has put them firmly back onto the Australian musical landscape and it certainly is a welcome return! SuperHappyFuntimesFriends (say that three times fast!) was released last month to critical acclaim on no less than five different formats: vinyl, CD, cassette, download and for the first time in Australia, Playbutton (a wearable badge containing the whole album). Coinciding with this latest release, the band’s 2nd studio album, UNIT, recently came in at No. 10 on the Triple J Top 100 Australian Albums of all time. With a 15 year career spanning 4 EPs, 17 singles and 13 albums and 6

ARIA Awards under their belts, BIG DAY OUT is pumped to welcome back their favourite Band in a Bubble on our 20th Anniversary year.

DRAPHT

Blowing onto the BIG DAY OUT stage this summer we welcome another first-timer , West Australian MC DRAPHT. Although new to the travelling circus that is the BIG DAY OUT, this is one wordsmith who has well and truly earned his position among the heads of the hip-hop state of Australia. With his fourth and most recent album, Life of Riley, DRAPHT has reached a level of success only few Australian artists, hip- hop and otherwise, can claim by debuting at No. 1 on the ARIA Album charts and topping the list of ARIA Award nominees for 2011 with a staggering seven nods. With tracks like the contagiously fun Rapunzel and Bali Party, there’s bound to be a hip-hop sing-along incited. You best be ready to bounce when DRAPHT blows in to BIG DAY OUT 2012.

CALLING ALL CARS

If CALLING ALL CARS were knocking on the door with their debut album Hold, Hold, Fire, in 2011 they well and truly kicked it in. Recorded over countless sleepless nights in producer Tom Larkin’s Melbourne studios, fiery follow-up Dancing with a Dead Man album is a huge step up for the band. But all the hard work paid off as Dancing with a Dead Man scored a Triple J Feature Album and cracked the ARIA Top 20. On the road the band have continued to dominate with a spate of sold out album launch shows, earning them opening slots on Foo Fighters’ upcoming Australian visit. No strangers to the big stage – having supported AC/DC and Queens of the Stone Age in the past and played the Melbourne BDO in 2010 – CALLING ALL CARS continue to prove their status as a hard-working, hard-rocking, “fearless” (Blunt Magazine) live act.

ART VS SCIENCE

It’s on like donkey kong at BIG DAY OUT 2012 as Art takes on Science in a battle royale, to once and for all crown a champion of this centuries old feud. OK, maybe not, after all we’re lovers not fighters, and ART VS. SCIENCE will definitely be spreading that love when they join us this summer. These wizards of electro-pop will be weaving the kind of magic on display in their double ARIA Award nominated debut album, The Experiment. And it’s not just Australia paying attention! The guys have been treading the international festival circuit and making a serious impression overseas. “Not only was I completely blown away by the quality of the sound, the infectious energy of the group and their ability to pull off these songs (which at first sounded a bit bizarre to me through headphones), I was most fascinated by thesheertalentofallthreemusiciansonalivelevel.”(HuffingtonPost.) Youdon’thavetopickaside, just come and grab a seat on the proverbial BIG DAY OUT fence to see it all go down.

KITTY, DAISY & LEWIS

If you weren’t so busy dancing, you’d be in awe of KITTY DAISY & LEWIS at BIG DAY OUT. This styling young English trio can play pretty much anything they lay their hands on. Channelling “a mix of late ’40s jive, danceable blues and proto-rock’n’roll with flair and enthusiasm” (The Vine), they’re joined on stage by bassist Ingrid and guitarist Graeme (aka their parents!). After busting out of their home studio with an album exploring rock’s roots in 2007, they created their own take on vintage with 2011’s Smoking in Heaven. “Festival stalwarts and vintage sonics trailblazers, their no-fuss rhythm and blues has little truck with reinventing the wheel and fizzes with the simple joy of creation” (NME). Yes, KITTY DAISY & LEWIS can do anything. But all you’ll remember is the fun when their fizz bounces off the stage at BIG DAY OUT 2012.

KIMBRA

If you are not familiar with her by now well then it really is about time you push that rock aside and step out into the light, as KIMBRA has officially arrived and claimed her position atop the throne of the

Australian music scene earning two ARIA Award nominations in the process. Adding not just a touch of glamour and sophistication to the lineup, KIMBRA offers up her debut album Vows, an eclectic blend of neo-pop and more moodier soulful tracks from the lead single Settle Down to the haunting duet Wandering Limbs. “Kimbra is making pop music that will pull you from your seat and have you listening on a loop” (Stated Magazine, NYC). Be at the official coronation of our latest pop princess at BIG DAY OUT 2012.

BLUEJU!CE

While BLUEJU!CE are often portrayed as pranksters, there’s a depth to their intelligence, drive and musicianship that doesn’t always shine in the light of, say, the skipping team video of previous gold single Broken Leg, or the man pash that shocked Mel and Kochie on Sunrise. To say they’re a dichotomy would be an understatement! The band’s long awaited third studio album, Company, released on Friday (11 November), a fitting title considering a BLUEJU!CE record wouldn’t be complete without some wincingly appraising relationship talk, as well as the sonic mood swings they’re famous for. In short, the highs and lows of human interaction which we know they’ll bring with them to the 2012 BIG DAY OUT stage.

ABBE MAY

ABBE MAY spent her late teens and early twenties in Australia’s sleaziest rock venues, busted up studios and unreliable tour vans before her debut BIG DAY OUT appearance in 2010. From those beginnings, Abbe has graduated from her critically acclaimed early explorations of rock and blues, to become a guitar slinging goddess with an atmospheric cocktail of sexy indie riff-rock, psychedelia and blues. Her latest album, Design Desire, was released in July 2011 to universal acclaim and also enjoyed feverish global radio support for the singles Mammalian Locomotion (the closing track on a recent episode of the hit series “Entourage”), Taurus Chorus and title track, Design Desire. It is with great pleasure that we welcome ABBE MAY back to the BIG DAY OUT stage in 2012.

PAPA VS PRETTY

Also battling it out on the stages of BIG DAY OUT 2012 are Sydney three-piece and resident “it” band PAPA VS PRETTY. With their critically acclaimed debut album United In Isolation Thomas Rawle, Angus Gardiner and Tom Myers have nabbed a coveted J Award nomination for ‘Australian Album of the Year’ as well as an all-important industry voted ARIA Award nomination for ‘Best Rock Album’. Despite their youth this is one band that definitely has the chops to match it with the best of them and what better place to prove it than BIG DAY OUT 2012!

DAS RACIST

Chaos. What else would you expect from a trio touting weed-edge/Hare Krishna hardcore/art-rap/freak- folk? That’s DAS RACIST, and a little of their chaos goes a long way – all the way from Brooklyn, New York to BIG DAY OUT 2012. “Not organized chaos,” said the New York Times after witnessing DAS RACIST live, “but actual chaos: a thrilling unreliability.” After racking up YouTube hits with Combination Pizza Hut and Taco Bell, Spin voted DAS RACIST a must-hear at SXSW 2010… A year and two mix-tapes later, the group was on the magazine’s cover with debut album Relax. With an “uncanny ability to make party songs about lightning-rod topics” (Los Angeles Times), Himanshu Kumar Suri, Victor Vazquez and hype-man Ashok Kondabolu drop “a litany of lyrical hyperlinks displaying a vast knowledge of rap history, revolutionaries and race relations” (Spin). Oh, and they’re funny, too. Get in on the joke with DAS RACIST at BIG DAY OUT this summer.

STONEFIELD

Sisters really are doin’ it for themselves and this young four-piece from rural Victoria sure as hell are! STONEFIELD are four sisters ranging in ages from 13 to 21, but don’t let their youth fool you, these girls

can seriously rock out with the best of them! Brought up on a musical diet of rock n roll legends like Zappa, Hendrix and Zeppelin the girls have been heavily influenced by the psychedelic sounds of the sixties and seventies and it’s easy to imagine them holding their own on the Woodstock stage. Flower power attitudes, peace sign motifs and John Lennon-esque sunglasses are optional, a readiness to the rock out like it’s ’69 is definitely required. It’ll be a good old-fashioned love-in this BIG DAY OUT!

KING CANNONS

It’s a simple ethos that hasn’t changed since day one for KING CANNONS . Six good friends coming together to create music crafted from their many different individual influences and inspirations. The result is ferocious; a constantly evolving, roots based rock n roll sound that is unmistakable. Slick, not only in their look, but in their sound, KING CANNONS own the stage and the audience. Never afraid to tell it how it is with tracks such as Take The Rock, or to relax and get introspective with songs like Time To Yourself – it’s immediate and impacting, always on point, and exactly what you need to get you moving. With their debut album set to drop in early 2012 be ready to be blown away by KING CANNONS at BIG DAY OUT this summer.

TONITE ONLY

TONITE ONLY are baaaack and badder then ever! Super producers Sam La More and Groove Terminator have “put the band back together” so to speak with the reincarnation of TONITE ONLY, and thankfully just in time to join us for BIG DAY OUT come January. Re-energised and rebuilt with an arsenal of fresh productions and the same spark that made them so on-point originally, the first phase of the duo’s grand return comes with the turbo-charged electro-house burner, We Run The Nite, a tune that struck its creators as instantaneously as it has club-goers around the world. Locally, the track signalled the successful return of the duo with We Run The Nite taking out the coveted Number 1 spot on the ARIA Club Charts for 11 consecutive weeks and taking home Best/Track Remix award at the Inthemix Awards 2011! With a live show that promises a concept that’s “never been tried before” we cannot wait to see what this dance duo deliver to BIG DAY OUT 2012

MISS KITTIN

MISS KITTIN, has over the past years become one of the most inspiring DJs and voices to emerge within the electronic music scene. For all her releases and collaborations (think ‘Frank Sinatra’ with production partner The Hacker and with Felix Da Housecat’s ‘Madame Hollywood’ to name a few) Kittin’s first and main love remains DJing. Anyone who has seen MISS KITTIN dancing behind the decks or grabbing the microphone mid-set will understand only too well that she is also a clubber at heart. Having spent over a decade cultivating her intransigent image, MISS KITTIN reliably brings all her gusto, charisma and inspiration to the decks, which have produced many seminal moments of dance-floor heaven and is rightly placed as one of the most revered and recognizable artists in Dance music today. Without further adieu please welcome MISS KITTIN who will be bringing ‘it’ and so much more to BIG DAY OUT 2012.

FAKER

It’s been a couple of years between drinks but we’re happy to announce that FAKER are returning to the fold for the 3rd time on the 2012 BDO. After announcing release plans for their Get Loved project earlier this year, the band went straight back on the road with a new line up and national tour with The Wombats. Their new EP, How Did We Not Get Loved, was released in October and their new album, Get Loved, is set to hit stores on 27 January, 2012. Lead singer, Nathan Hudson, described the new album as “a record which looks up at night in empty cities, sprints through a crowd, which takes pictures of beautiful broken things and which, despite its adult ironies, will carve out a map in your heart”. We already *heart* you, FAKER, and look forward to getting loved with you again in 2012

THE T-REK BAND

T-Rek is Australian producer/musician/DJ, Tarek Smallman, and THE T-REK BAND is the vehicle for him to perform live versions of his guitar based club productions including Out My Bitch! (ARIA #1) and The Devil Claps among others. THE T-REK BAND live show is a continuously mixed (DJ style) blend of club heavy bass rhythms and searing desert rock psychedelia. T-Rek handles guitar, vocal and music machine duties onstage, with a rotating cast of guest musicians on live drums, percussion and analogue synthesizers. As well as performing around Australia weekly as a DJ, guitarist and vocalist, T-Rek has collaborated and performed with a diverse range of bands and musicians on stage and in the studio, including past BDO alumni Kim Salmon, Infusion, and Something for Kate. T-Rek’s new album ‘Dance Music’ will be released February 2012 and you’ll get to hear it first at the BIG DAY OUT
