Three years ago From Ashes To New visited Australia for the first time for Good Things Festival, and now tonight in Sydney we are here for the bands first ever headline tour show in Australia. I missed them at Good Things, so I’m excited to finally catch FATN live!
Banks Arcade open the night and these NZ via Melbourne boys are ready to warm things up. They power through their set, even ambitiously getting the pit going but the crowd obliged and are digging what they’re giving us. With a new album just out and letting them showcase some tracks is great. They did an awesome job getting the room ready and this was my first time seeing them since 2022 and in that time they’ve grown as a live act and delivered tonight. Watch out for these guys!!
This is a full room tonight which is always amazing to see and as the Backstreet Boys intro plays it builds to then slow down and as a video plays the band take the stage. Danny leads off ‘Love Me’ as they lock in and then as Matt takes his parts that are the perfect balance it sets the scene for the night. With a “SYDNEY!!” and a resounding cheer they jump straight into ‘New Disease’ and this heavy one won the crowd over big time. What I love about this band is that mix of vocals and the heavy beats that just work, especially with ‘Nightmare’ and yeah this is where it’s at. Hearing the crowd sing this one back is awesome, and for only their second trip here you know people have been waiting for this. Matt raps in ‘Heartache’ as the band rejoin and truly bring it in while there are arms waving and people loving this. Some vocal lessons and crowd participation leading into ‘Drag Me’ and as we all yell it back and they tear into this clear crowd favourite you can tell everyone here is happy while a mini mosh happens before they close this one out. Ok yes big riffs start ‘Monster In Me’ this very heavy and fast rap laden track is pardon the pun, a monster. Matt addresses the crowd and I’ve never heard a rock singer say “circadian rhythm” before but here we are as they discuss getting in yesterday and being tired but they’re here to rock and we’re ready.
Throwing it way back and leaving Matt on stage to rap ‘My Name’ before the band rejoin him to give it the power. The trade off vocals here are great as Danny and Matt have that perfect rhythm together. That was a highlight. What a song. Talking about coming here and how excited and thankful they are to be in Australia you can hear how genuine Matt is and it’s awesome to hear. ‘Barely Breathing’ is up and this catchy little ditty deserves its place in the set as phones light the room up and I always love some crowd participation and it’s happening tonight. ‘Villain’ keeps things running along nicely and a big mid breakdown was killer. Celebrating their first gold record and throwing it WAY back but keeping it in the set with ‘Through It All’ you can hear the different era but man it works. The arms are waving again and they are truly into this tonight and you can tell a crowd that’s starved for a band that’s not really been here before and especially for a first headliner run. ‘Nothing’ bleeds it out and keeps the pace up while opening a mosh and with fists raised they explode to close this one out. Oh man that’s some heavy, that’s the heaviest it’s been tonight.
Something brand new with the nice and chunky ‘Black Hearts’ and it fit in perfectly. Man I think that was close to my favourite of the night. OK now my favourite of the catalogue. It’s time for ‘Die For You’ and man what a song this is. I know that a lot of people may have found the band via this song and you can tell by the way it’s being sung back to the stage tonight. What a song. That was needed by many tonight.
You know this is a show the band will remember, their first headline show in Australia and leaving us with one last song, and an instruction to “lose our fucking mind” they leave us with the very loud and heavy ‘Panic’ and what a way to go out. Everyone is very happy with that choice. A very, very thankful band stay on stage to soak it in and acknowledge the fans, it was great to see.
That really was a great show from a killer band. I know they’ll be back soon enough and I recommend when they do that if you want a great night of rockin’ heavy songs to go and check out From Ashes To New.
