Dirty Passion is a Swedish, Malmö based rock band formed in 2006 by members Emil Ekbladh (vocals), Christopher Olsson (guitar), Björn Wilander (bass) and Markus Winberg (drums). With main influences from the seventies’ and eighties’ rock scene the band plays all original material which would be best described as classic rock.
Since the start, Dirty Passion have been recording and touring intensively, gaining a rapidly growing fan base – locally as well as abroad. With well more than 100 concerts played, the band has rocked native venues like KB (Malmö), Mejeriet (Lund), The Tivoli (Helsingborg) and Sticky Fingers (Gothenburg) and foreign venues like The Underworld (London, UK), Borderline (Pisa, Italy), The Rock (Copenhagen, Denmark) and Matrix (Bochum, Germany). Dirty Passion have played support act to bands like Saxon, Y&T, Crashdïet and Towers of London and in early 2010 they supported Faster Pussycat and Enuff Z’Nuff for a month long European tour, playing 22 concerts in seven different countries. In October 2010 the band signed a record deal with Swedish Denomination Records, a sub-label of Transubstans Records. The debut album Different Tomorrow was released worldwide on December 13th, 2010.
Some bands build it up on good playing skills and others on good song material. Dirty Passion do both. These four natural born rockers, with loads of experience, will always bring you the best kick ass rock – on stage as well as in the studio.
While other bands come and go, one things is for sure: What you see here is only the beginning.
Dirty Passion – how long has the band been together and what’s the inspiration behind the name?
Dirty Passion started out in late 2006. We all came from previous bands that was pretty much going nowhere, so we though it was time to start all over and create something new and really good. The band name just came to us when we sat down and discussed it and we all liked it instantly.
For the benefit of those who haven’t yet heard your music, how would you describe your sound?
We play classic rock with influences from the 70’s and 80’s rock scene. If you like the great rock bands from the past decades you will easily love us! We focus a lot on the songwriting and wouldn’t let anything that’s not up to par out of the rehearsal studio.
You have just released your debut album ‘Different Tomorrow’. How long did the process of writing and recording the songs for this album take?
We have tons of great material from the past. We could have taken the easy way out by just re-recording the old demos, but we chose to write a bunch of new songs too. We decided to mainly have new songs on the album, but still include a couple of old ones in new versions. It’s our debut album and I think people who buy it appreciate to have some familiar killer songs on there too. We wrote some new songs in basically no time and then spent three weeks in the studio recording the album. Everything went really smoothly and there’s a great mix on the album.
In terms of your songwriting, what do you consider to be the most important ingredient in a song?
Vocals? Seriously, you can write good songs in so many different ways. You need to have some good melodies and some form of structure but after that, the sky is the limit. You just add what feels right at the moment. Don’t play by any rules.
What bands did you grow up listening to and how did they help create the style of music that can now be heard throughout ‘Different Tomorrow’?
I grew up listening to Kiss and then went on discovering bands like Guns n’ Roses, Europe, The Darkness, Alice Cooper and a lot more. I’ve always loved rock music with great melodies; that’s what I grew up listening to and that’s what I try to bring to the band. If you listen to the album I’m sure you’ll hear a lot of our influences shining through. It’s kinda funny though, ’cause people keep telling me they hear influences from certain bands in certain songs on the album, and usually I’ve never even heard the band they’re referring to. I think that’s kinda cool. 
You are a band that certainly likes to play live shows and have toured with some of hard rocks biggest names such as Saxon, Faster Pussycat, Enuff Z’Nuff, Y&T and Crashdiet…what have been some of the touring highlights in 2010?
Touring Europe with Faster Pussycat and Enuff Z’Nuff early in the year was a highlight of course. It was really wild and crazy from day one. We had some awesome shows and some equally awesome after parties. Just as we returned home from that tour we got to play with Saxon which was cool. We grew up listening to them and to share the stage with them was mind-blowing. Biff played their whole show with a Dirty Passion t-shirt on! Crashdïet is another cool band we’ve supported this year. It was just a couple of weeks ago in our home town of Malmö. It wasn’t the first time we met them, but it was our first time playing with them. We have a lot of fans who’re also into Crashdïet so I was a good night for everyone involved.
What can people expect from spending 45 minutes at a Dirty Passion live show, here’s your chance to tell the rest of the world what we are missing out on!
We always give 100%. I look at us as a live band first and foremost. We started the band to get out there and play and once we’re onstage we feel at home. We don’t really fit in anywhere else. That being said; if you like what you hear on our album, you’re gonna love it live!
You are from Malmo, Sweden…over here in Australia, the likes of Stockholm and Gothenburg are more familiar to us for producing Swedish rock and metal bands What can you tell us about the rock scene down in Malmo?
The rock scene in Malmö is quite alright. It’s getting better every year. There are some good bands and some really good rock clubs. I still believe Stockholm is better and probably Gothenburg too. There are so many great bands coming out of these cities, they’re way ahead of Malmö for some reason.
