Simple Plan are a band that love Australia, and tonight here in Sydney we are getting something very special. To celebrate the 20th anniversary of ‘Still Not Getting Any…’ the band are playing it in full for us. Never been done before, and I’m pretty sure this sold out crowd are ready and excited… so here we go!!
Coming on to the Star Wars theme is amazing and as they hit the opening note they jump straight into ‘Shut Up’ to open the show and the album as we start ‘Still Not Getting Any…’ and as always they sound great, this is a band that know how to do it and do it so very well. This sold out crowd tonight is 100% locked in and the energy is off the charts. This is the perfect way to open the show and the album. ‘Welcome to My Life’ is up next and the arms waving in time cement the love for this one and with some early confetti showering the crowd this is going to be fun. ‘Perfect World’ keeps the album ticking along and after an impromptu Happy Birthday for Pierre, we speed things up with ‘Thank You’ and with some excellent crowd participation they belt this one out. ‘Me Against The World’ is one of my favourite Simple Plan songs and hearing it tonight is damn amazing. Reminiscing about the times and giving more love to us they let Jeff hit those harmonics for ‘Crazy’ and everyone is very happy. The confetti budget must be huge for tonight as here we blow again! I do have to say that key change gets me every time! It’s time to ‘Jump’ both musically and literally as the place is doing just that. That’s a staple in the set and was just as good tonight as it’s always been.
Pierre throws on an acoustic as the guys leave the stage as he plays ‘Everytime’ solo. That’s a special moment. The band come back to rock things back up with ‘Promise’ and these guys really know how to write a catchy song, and they are playing the hell out of this album. This really is a treat. They are so tight and watching the camaraderie between these four legends is what makes them so good. ‘One’ is the penultimate track on ‘Still Not Getting Any…’ and this has been so good to revisit the album this way. Revisiting the album again and talking about it up there it’s great to hear how much they love it as much as we do. And now for the first time ever they play ‘Untitled’ just on piano with special guest Bailey on the keys and wow what a powerful version of that amazing song to close the album. So there we have it. First time and we were there to witness it all. That was so good that you’d think they’d been doing this format for years, but as Pierre said they may take that show on the road so if they do make sure you go see them do this.
The band head off stage for a quick breather but they are back and it’s time to throw in some more hits. ‘I’d Do Anything’ rings in this part of the set and I can tell that the next 45 mins are going to be insane. More confetti fills the venue ! It’s time for ‘Jet Lag’ and no way, my old mate Jenna from Tonight Alive gets up to sing it with them. Amazing. That song is outstanding and was even better tonight, and I’ll say it… that’s my favourite Simple Plan song, it’s out there now. So hearing it is always the best and with Jenna on vocals it made it even better. ‘Addicted’ goes way back and has everyone yelling back to the stage. The giant beach balls come out for ‘Summer Paradise’ and this one brings the chilled vibes and everyone is here for it. Time for ‘What’s New, Scooby Doo?’ as a few Scoobys take the stage for that short and sharp banger. The love this band has for Australia and Sydney is insane and as this next song cements for Pierre it’s ’Where I Belong’ and they are welcome back any time. ‘I’m Just a Kid’ begins and as we’re told it’s a song that is legally allowed to drink in every country so it’s no longer a kid and we’re going back to 2002. They belt it out, and then Chuck makes his way out from behind the drums and Pierre takes his spot as Chuck takes his life into his own hands, well our hands as he heads into the crowd and while Pierre drums Seb takes the vocals. He made it back alive and it’s time for the acoustic to return with a little ‘Wonderwall’ before ‘Perfect’ starts as the venue lights up with phones. One last confetti blast and a what a perfect way to end the perfect song and the perfect set.
Simple Plan are an amazing live band, their vibe, their groove, their love for what they do, it just works and they deliver every time. Tonight was special and after seeing these guys a number of times, tonight was a special night for us and for the band and we all lapped it up. They may say we’re still not getting any, but tonight we got plenty!!
See you next year, fellas.
