“I noticed that I couldn’t write just one lyric about the subject which is my burn-out. And so I wrote three lyrics that look at it from different angles. I connected them by the title even though musically they’re not connected.”
Floor Jansen’s voice is already known for its wide range and variety, you may know her from After Forever, or in particular Nightwish, but in ReVamp she shows the world she can do even more! From opera to raw screams; from rock to a light and almost whispered sound, she knows how to ‘master the cords’ and takes you along with her on a wild ride throughout the album! The band has just released their new album ‘Wild Card’ and it’s a killer!
We had the chance to send some questions off for Floor Jansen to answer for us, and she obliged telling us about the album, touring and more…
You second album ‘Wild Card’ is released this month, so let’s get some people excited, if you could use only five words to describe it, how would you do so to get people interested into wanting to take a listen?
Heavy, dark, versatile, personal, in your face.
Is there a story behind naming the album ‘Wild Card’?
A wild card is an unforeseen and unexpected factor. For me that is what the music on this album is, you never know what you’re gonna get 🙂
In the three years since the debut both lyrically and musically, what or who is the main inspiration/influence in the result that has ended up on the debut?
This album was written by band members Jord Otto, Ruben Wijga and myself with guidance of producer Joost van den Broek. This already changed the sound a bit. We made a musical moodboard with a long list of all kinds of songs as inspiration sources and a short list of ingredients we’d like to have on the album. This formed the base idea of the album and the red thread of the story. A great creative way of working and getting everyone to get the same focus.
In terms of your song writing, what do you consider to be the most important ingredients that make up a ReVamp song?
Heavy guitars, cool riffs, modern synth sounds, creative drums, pounding bass and versatile singing.
Going into the second album, what if anything did you do differently this time around creating the album compared to your debut?
Worked with different people as described 🙂
On the other side of that, did you go in with a vision of how you wanted the album to come together or did this play out once in the studio?
See previous answer.
I was particularly intrigued by ‘The Anatomy of a Nervous Breakdown’ story over three songs, what was the idea behind doing this?
I noticed that I couldn’t write just one lyric about the subject which is my burn-out. And so I wrote three lyrics that look at it from different angles. I connected them by the title even though musically they’re not connected.
You had some great guests play on the album such as Mark from Epica and Devin Townsend, how did they get involved and what dynamic were they able to bring to the songs they were a part of?
Mark has been a collegue and friend since our teenage years. We worked together on many occasions and we had a song (Misery’s No Crime) that really fitted with his type of growls. He did an amazing job on it! And Devin made the song Neurasthenia a complete track, it’s as if the song was written for him. He sang the melodies I wrote but altered them too in this typical way making the song perfect 🙂
So, you have a run of dates in Europe with Kamelot coming up, what can people expect if they come to see you play on this run?
A very energetic live show with songs from both ReVamp albums.
Just because it’d be remiss of me to not ask, do you think we could see you in Australia anytime soon?
We are looking into many options for 2014. I cannot say if Australia is in the plans yet but do know I would LOVE it! Being in your wonderful country with Nightwish makes me want to show ReVamp how awesome it is!
Lastly, here’s a chance to gaze into your crystal ball and see the future. In the next year, ReVamp will:
1. Tour the world
2. Win the world championship, ehm, no, tour the world!
3. Grow and grow and grow and reach all the fans we have worldwide
Thanks for your time today and May the Rock be with You!
