It is with much excitement that Stop Start welcome US indie rock legends Nada Surf to the label.
The bands brand new studio album ‘The Stars Are Indifferent To Astronomy’ will be released February 24, and for the first time in Australia their entire back catalogue will also be re-released at a special price.
Nada Surf formed in New York in 1994 but it wasn’t until 1996 that the band released their first full length studio album High/Low through Elektra Records. The song ‘Popular’ from that album became a summer anthem in the US and Europe. In 1998 the bands sophomore record ‘The Proximity Effect’ received rave reviews, resulting in a heavy touring schedule across continental Europe.
In 2003 the critically-lauded masterpiece, ‘Let Go’ was released.

The record was supported by the bands only Australian live dates to date. Enter ‘The Weight Is a Gift’. Picking up where ‘Let Go’ left off, ‘The Weight Is a Gift’ answers questions of lust and deception, greed and love, joy and regret and the rites of passage you weren’t quite ready to pass through.
Produced primarily by rock wizard Chris Walla (Death Cab For Cutie) and the band itself,‘The Weight is a Gift’ chips away the grit and pretence clogging up much of today’s rock agenda, leaving only pop in its purest form. ‘Lucky’ their last studio album of original material we released in 2008 followed by ‘If I Had A Hi Fi’, a shout out to 12 of their favourite songs from other bands and artist including Depeche Mode, Spoon and Australian band The Go-Betweens.
Andy Bryan of Stop Start says of the signing, “To know Nada Surf is too love Nada Surf. They are just one of those bands that if you’ve been lucky enough to be exposed to their music you become a fan for life. Australia’s hard-core Nada Surf fans have been somewhat underserved thus far with only one Australian tour 10 years ago. Making all their material available and hopefully bringing the band back to these shores seems like the least we can do for a band of this stature”.
