Melbourne’s progressive heavy music scene is in fine form in 2012 and how better to celebrate than to combine the force of three of its finest on an impressive triple bill. This March, longstanding genre leaders Twelve Foot Ninja and Jericco will be joined by newcomers, Circles on the national ‘Swarm Tour’.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Twelve Foot Ninja<\/strong>\u00a0suspected their live performance was sufficiently honed when they were invited to support international acts\u00a0Periphery\u00a0<\/strong>(US) and\u00a0Tesseract\u00a0<\/strong>(UK) last year, and prompted Periphery founder \/guitarist Misha Mansoor to tweet jubilantly\u00a0\u201cTwelve Foot Ninja are basically one of the best live bands I have ever seen in my life. Holy f*** they are tight\u201d.<\/em>?\u00a0?\u00a0As they put the finishing touches on their debut album, due mid-2012, you can just sense that something big is on its way. It’s only a matter of time before the rest of Australia feels the full force of what\u00a0Twelve Foot Ninja<\/strong>\u00a0are bringing to the game.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, after three years together, 137 blistering live shows, 8 festival appearances and a stack of sold-out headlining gigs, alternative rock maestros\u00a0Jericco\u00a0<\/strong>are gearing up to offer their adoring fan base a taste of things to come? With two successful EPs and one live album up their sleeve, the five-piece will release the second single\u00a0The Art Of Illusion<\/em>\u00a0from their forthcoming debut album on March 1st\u00a02012, just in time to coincide with ‘Swarm Tour’\u2019s commencement.<\/p>\n

Finally, relative newcomers\u00a0Circles<\/strong>, will lend their unique take on progressive metal to the ‘Swarm Tour’ bill. Momentum came quickly for the 5-piece, when they caught the attention of UK’s Basick Records (home to\u00a0Monuments\u00a0<\/strong>&\u00a0Aliases<\/strong>) who promptly signed the band and released their debut EP\u00a0The Compass<\/em>\u00a0in 2011 to critical acclaim.<\/p>\n

Don\u2019t miss this phenomenal bill of Melbourne’s finest as it rolls into your town this March.<\/p>\n

We tracked down both Twelve Foot Ninja and Jericco for a chat about the upcoming tour and what they’ve been up to so far in 2012…<\/p>\n

Hey Kin, thanks for taking the time to answer these questions!\u00a0 So first things first, a quick update on new music!\u00a0 You\u2019ve recently been pretty busy working on your new album which will be out soon, here\u2019s your chance to tell us whatever you can reveal at this point, or care to share, album title, release date, where you recorded it etc\u2026fire away!
\n<\/strong>Ok! The album has taken the best part of eighteen months and is now in its final stages of creation. \u00a0We only have a working title at the moment, Not Here to F%$k Spiders<\/em>. We still haven’t decided what to call it.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

We’ll be ‘road-testing’ a couple of new songs on the ‘SWARM’ tour to help us refine the final release.\u00a0So we’ll be talking to audience members along the way to get their feedback.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

The majority of it was recorded\/engineered by Hadyn Buxton, in his home studio. Hadyn was the legend who mixed both New Dawn<\/em> and Smoke Bomb<\/em>\u00a0EPs. He has done an outstanding job.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

I could reveal a release date, but then I would have to make you “disappear”. And at the moment, I’m too busy disposing of the last person I revealed the date to!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

What gives you the most satisfaction, recording or playing a live gig?
\n<\/strong>Recording, as I discovered, can be quite a stressful process. It’s a little like flying blind, because you have absolutely no gauge on how it will be received. \u00a0So for me, live gigs are more satisfying from an energetic viewpoint, as you receive an instantaneous response from the audience.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Speaking of live gigs, coming up in March, it\u2019s time to\u00a0 get back on the road for the \u201cSwarm\u201d tour, which is a killer lineup!\u00a0 So what do you have to say about your fellow bands on the lineup?
\n<\/strong>Jericco started roughly the same time we did, so we’ve known those lads for a while\u00a0and have done quite a few gigs with them. They are a great bunch of dudes, with a great progressive live show.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

I have known of Circles since their inception. One of their guitarists, Matty C, has been a best mate of mine for about 10 years. They signed to Basick Records in the UK last year, and their star is definitely rising. They are, without bias, one of my favourite bands. This tour is gearing up to be massive one!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Hopefully there\u2019s a bunch of potential new fans coming to check you out on the \u201cSwarm\u201d tour.\u00a0 Anticipating their reaction to seeing you perform live for the first time, what 5 words do you think they would walk away using to describe what they\u2019ve just witnessed?
\n<\/strong>That show tickled my balls!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

What if anything do you feel you do differently to try and stamp your authority as a live band?
\n<\/strong>We attempt to keep it nice and tight, keep the energy up, and have a great time! So, nothing really that different, as that’s the bottom line for bands to make an impact.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Oh yeah…and we dress up in ninja gear! \ud83d\ude09<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

You\u2019ve existed for a few years now, during this time, have you observed any major shifts in the \u201cheavy\u201d music scene here in Australia?
\n<\/strong>I’m not sure about ‘shifts’ per se. The music is becoming more diverse. And I have noticed that there is certainly more of an audience for it than the mainstream would have you believe. There is a plethora of untapped talent out there that deserves more acknowledgement. Check out Serious Beak, Humality, and The Schoenberg Automaton for examples.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

With 2012 already nearly two months down, what 3 things do you have on the agenda to complete during 2012?
\n<\/strong>1. Tour with some awesome bands!
\n2. Release our debut album in a way that hasn’t been don’t before (that we know of!)
\n3. Play bigger venues.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

\nWe’ve been working very hard on the album and only have four songs to go. We’ve already released One single Monsters<\/em>\u00a0and have another The Art Of Illusion<\/em> on it’s way in March. \u00a0We did it this way to give fans a taste of what’s to come.<\/p>\n

So when you guys first sat down for the pre-planning before you got stuck into writing and recording, what was the key thing you wanted to deliver with this album\u2026aside from new songs of course!<\/strong>
\nThe first thing is that we wanted to learn the lesson from our last two EP’s. Better song writing, songs that get to the point, songs that are about the lyrics and vocals and bounce. \u00a0More focus on telling the story rather than the sounds and effect we use.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

What would you say was the biggest influence on what you\u2019ve come up with for the new album\u2026whether it be in a musical, lyrical or spiritual sense?
\n<\/strong>Most of the music on this album was written buy Roy and is a reflection of what he has been going through in his personal life.. As for the lyrics and vocal melodies, that’s Brent and reflects his personal life also.<\/p>\n

And let me tell you that in both case it has been no picnic. None the less we’ve also managed to capture some very up beat moments on this album. Oh my god I can’t believe we are talking about the album. We cant wait!!<\/p>\n

Most comical moment during the recording sessions\u2026.surely there is something that springs to mind?<\/strong>
\nAll Drama in the Jericco camp.. Ha ha ha.\u00a0 Captain wet beard was funny! …. Jordan left the studio in the middle of an argument and came back two hours latter with a Captain wet beard Tattoo on his arm. How can you argue with\u00a0someone who has a Captain wet beard tattooed on his arm.<\/p>\n

What gives you the most satisfaction, recording an album or playing a live gig?<\/strong>
\nKnowing that the album will be heard and that people are waiting for this.. and the look on there faces and ours while we all bounce during the live show is why we do it at the end of the day.<\/p>\n

\nWe’re stoked to shared stage with bands of such calibre. We are massive fans of both TFN and Circles and think that they have done a great job boosting the live music scene. We also need to mission great Sydney band Breaking Orbit,\u00a0Canberra band Perpetual End and Adelaide band Tabul Rassa because they really are amazing bands.<\/p>\n

\nThe energy that we share with our audience and the moments that we share during the live set are honest and powerful.. so with out sounding cheesy it relay is a religious moment in way.<\/p>\n

\nIt’s always been hard but lately its harder.. It seems that people are reluctant to go out, whoever the quality of bands around is better than ever.<\/p>\n

\n1. Complete the album give something new and fresh to the fans.
\n2. Go overseas
\n3. Get endorsement with deary farms for unlimited MILK..<\/p>\n
