Drummer Matt Sorum is probably best known for his work in Guns N Roses from 1990 – 1997 before it all went terribly pear shaped for one of the biggest rock bands in the world, but we’re sure many of you are aware of the G N’ R story so no need to fill you in.\u00a0 Prior to Guns N’ Roses he was a member of The Cult and after Guns N’ Roses was a member of Rock ‘Supergroup’ Velvet Revolver which featured both Slash and Duff from Guns N Roses, after two albums with Velvet Revolver and the departure of their singer Scott Weiland and currently on the hunt for a new one, this time off has given Matt the opportunity to focus on new projects, new bands, producing, TV and plenty of other projects that you’ll have to read on to hear about, some you’d never even guess in a million years.<\/p>\n

Matt was invited to Sydney as part of the Grand Opening Party of The Hard Rock Cafe and thanks to Davidson Communications we were able to have a great chat with Matt Sorum, he’s a great talker, and we could’ve easily kept going if we both had the time.\u00a0 One of the coolest rockers we’ve spoken to, he gave some some insight into what the current status of Velvet Revolver is and a possible idea of who their new singer could soon be and could’ve been that unfortunately never eventuated.\u00a0 Also, of course we had to ask what would happen if Axl Rose gave him a call to put the band back together and he gave us his take on just what could make that happen!<\/p>\n

Welcome back to Sydney, you\u2019re here for the grand opening of The Hard Rock cafe here, how cool was it for you to be involved with this?<\/strong>
\nI was just wondering why they asked me ha ha ha ha.\u00a0 I don\u2019t know, don\u2019t you have anybody else\u2019s number?\u00a0 I thought that was pretty cool, well I\u2019d known Mark Spillane because I\u2019d worked with his band Syndicate and I\u2019d been talking about coming down here and jamming with those kids and supporting them you know.\u00a0 God, I was on a bit of a whirlwind last week and its was a decision that was like \u2018Oh God, I\u2019m going to be tired.\u2019\u00a0 Thursday I played Mexico, flew in did LA on Friday, flew to New York on Saturday, flew back from New York Sunday then flew here, so I was a little bit like this is gonna be a burner.\u00a0 By the time I\u2019d got on the airplane, I\u2019d lost my passport, I made the last flight after about four hours at the airport and by the time I got on the airplane I was just knackered and I slept the whole fuckin\u2019 way, it was great, I was by myself, I\u2019d even lost my girlfriend in the transition, she went home, because I had to buy another flight on Qantas, it was stupid amount of money and I said I guess it\u2019s just me going on this trip, so by the time I got on the plane I was all alone, I was thinking, I think I\u2019m gonna fuckin\u2019 sleep for like twelve hours which was great.\u00a0 I got here and I felt pretty good, came straight to The Hard Rock and jammed last night, the band was fairly consistent, we had a couple of little do-hickies, nothing major for rock and roll.<\/p>\n

Did you get a chance to check out any of the bands yesterday?<\/strong>
\nI did, I saw a bit of the girl group, Screaming Bikini, they were pretty cool.
\nI saw you down there rockin out to Syndicate too<\/strong>.
\nYeah I was signing a lot of autographs at the point, I wanted to watch the band.\u00a0 The drummer\u2019s spectacular and I like that singer kid, they\u2019re all good players.<\/p>\n

Now you have been here with both Guns N\u2019 Roses and Velvet Revolver, what\u2019s your take on the Aussie rock crowds compared to those around the world?<\/strong>
\nGreat. Great rock crowds, you know I think I would have to say for white people, they\u2019re probably the best white rock crowd in the world.\u00a0 Like Latin\u2019s take it up just a notch, just a slight notch, so the Aussie\u2019s gotta take it up and they can beat the Latin\u2019s.\u00a0 The Latin\u2019s are fuckin\u2019 crazy, in South America, mental.\u00a0 I mean something about the South Americans, they don\u2019t get as much as we do, or even Australia, Australia gets a little bit less than maybe North America and Europe so I think it\u2019s more about they\u2019re not spoiled, they\u2019re very grateful you\u2019re here, they\u2019re like \u2018Fuck, you came a long ways to play for us.\u2019 Right?\u00a0 I think it\u2019s that mentality, because Americans just suck, Americans are fuckin\u2019 spoiled, you know they\u2019re like \u2018oh yeah, it\u2019s just another band coming through my town\u2019 and they\u2019re gonna be like (motions bored clapping) it\u2019s like come on, number one, we\u2019re musicians and we have egos and give us a little love for fucks sake, we\u2019re up here sweating our balls off.\u00a0 But the Australians are great, I think they always have been and I think the backbone of Australia is the working class, so it\u2019s got that working class, beer drinking, rock and roll AD\/DC down and dirty, Angels, Rose Tattoo, it\u2019s built from hearty stock.<\/p>\n

I spoke to Slash last August and he was saying you were in the process of auditioning new singers for Velvet Revolver.\u00a0 Have you in fact found the new guy?\u00a0 Can you give us a scoop?<\/strong>
\n(Matt leans back in his chair and folds his arms looking sly) How did he react to that?
\nHe was the one that told me you were auditioning singers including an Aussie guy who was in the running for it\u2026<\/strong>
\nYeah the guy from Australia never came around, I don\u2019t know what happened to that guy. But we spent a lot of time sort of like waiting for Slash to get home to try guys because he worked all last year, like a year and a half.\u00a0 By the time he got back we had Corey Taylor in the band and we\u2019d done a bunch of songs with Corey Taylor and Slash wasn\u2019t hearing it\u2026 me and Duff were ready to go with Corey Taylor, we were like \u2018Let\u2019s Go\u2019 this is manly rock, it\u2019s different.\u00a0 It wasn\u2019t as swagger rock, Weiland was swaggery and so was Axl and this was more like (motions a solid stand at the microphone) and Slash likes the swagger, and I do too but\u2026 so he didn\u2019t go for it.\u00a0 I was a little bit bummed, because Corey\u2019s a good dude, he\u2019s a good worker I think we could\u2019ve killed with that line up.\u00a0 In respect to Slash, everyone\u2019s gotta be on the team.
\nSo no one yet?<\/strong>
\nNah, they\u2019re trying out a guy I think tonight or tomorrow, Jimmy Gnecco from a band called \u2018Ours\u2019, but we\u2019ll see how that works, he\u2019s a real kind of artsy singer, he sings like Jeff Buckley-ish he\u2019s got a lot of pipes, he\u2019s got a lot of range.\u00a0 I think Slash needs that high range, even Weiland had a little bit lower register and it didn\u2019t quite\u2026 the thing that worked about Guns N Roses was Axl\u2019s fuckin\u2019 shit on top of the guitars and the power of Guns N Roses, it\u2019s like AC\/DC, fuckin\u2019 Brian Johnson, he\u2019s up there.\u00a0 You know you\u2019ve got the rhythm it\u2019s just fuckin\u2019 heavy, but the top end is that vocal.
\nSo the status of Velvet Revolver is, you\u2019re just waiting?<\/strong>
\nYeah we\u2019re just waiting.\u00a0 We haven\u2019t put a fork in it, there\u2019s been days when I\u2019m like \u2018FUCK IT!\u2019 can\u2019t we just say it\u2019s over?\u00a0 But why?\u00a0 We don\u2019t have to.\u00a0 If it resurrects itself, so be it.\u00a0 Slash is able to go out and get a real taste of, and in Slash\u2019s defence, he\u2019s put up with a lot of shit, we all have and after that experience with the last guy that was similar to the first guy it was kinda like I just wanna go have fun.\u00a0 Make some decisions, play some rock and roll, go on stage on time.\u00a0 I get it, I just went on the road with Motorhead last Summer, and I\u2019m like, whoa this is pretty easy, go on stage, play some Rock and Roll, come off, get on the bus and go to the next place.\u00a0 It\u2019s really an easy life.<\/p>\n

So if I was to say to you, you get a call from Axl saying \u2018Matt, I want to put the band back together, your line up\u2019 would you do it?<\/strong>
\nI mean probably have to be discussion in to, I don\u2019t know if I\u2019d want to dive back into the drama, I really don\u2019t.\u00a0 I\u2019m a different guy and I even didn\u2019t enjoy it then, it was very difficult. I\u2019m not saying I\u2019m the guy, if they want me that\u2019s cool, but I said it in the press once before, maybe they should just take both of us out, if he can\u2019t play the whole set, just play the Appetite, you guys can afford it, give them everything.\u00a0 At least give them THAT line up, give them Izzy, Duff, Slash, Axl and Steven or me if the band doesn\u2019t think, or whatever, but I can\u2019t say I\u2019m in any position to\u2026 I took that job with Guns N Roses, when I was in that band all I did was have fun, the one thing I didn\u2019t have to do was make any major decisions.<\/p>\n

In retrospect, I look back and I go \u2018wow.\u2019 When I got in Velvet Revolver, I remember being much more of a business head, like let\u2019s do this and try not to fuck it up and when things started getting fucked up again and when things started to fizzle, it\u2019s really \u2018oh shit\u2026\u2019 because it\u2019s hard, we were moving again, let\u2019s keep going, let\u2019s go, let\u2019s go.\u00a0 You know I watch bands like Foo Fighters and these machines, Dave Grohl\u2019s the leader and he\u2019s like \u2018Let\u2019s Go!\u2019 and the bands like \u2018OK Dave\u2019 and I\u2019m like God, why can\u2019t I just be like that?\u00a0 Or Metallica, because they\u2019ve had their problems but they\u2019ve worked out their differences, and they go we\u2019ve got a great things here, we\u2019re adults, let\u2019s be men.\u00a0 I think that\u2019s all it would take, would be two guys sitting in a room, Slash and Axl, and say let\u2019s just talk this out all the way to the end, with somebody else sitting there.\u00a0 Just fuckin\u2019 spill, it might take a month of serious therapy, Mick Jagger and Keith Richards have been through way more shit than those two knuckleheads, I mean and they sit there and they say \u2018Guess what, we\u2019re going to go out on tour next year to keep our 25 bedroom mansions in the south of France\u2019 and that\u2019s really where it\u2019s at with the Stones, they\u2019ve got lifestyles ha ha ha ha, they\u2019ve gotta go out again now, they\u2019re like 70, geez\u2026 Once you become that level, now you\u2019ve become that level and you\u2019ve felt that sensation, now keeping that sensation is like a drug.\u00a0 Slash knows going out on stage is the one thing that keeps him alive, he\u2019s the hardest touring guy I\u2019ve ever seen or Lemmy Kilmister, I\u2019ll see Lemmy Kilmister back in LA and he\u2019s at the Rainbow Bar and Grill and he\u2019s just waiting to go back out, he loves it, it\u2019s his life.\u00a0 I love it too, I\u2019m a little bit different now, it\u2019s never going to be comfortable but I want it to be a little bit easier.\u00a0 To go out and play Rock and Roll, have a good time, Duff McKagan goes out on the road with Loaded, fuckin\u2019 stays at the Quality Inn, he doesn\u2019t give a shit, but he\u2019s always been that guy, I just wanna go play.\u00a0 Yeah, but he\u2019d rather be on the big stage, headlining the main dressing room ha ha ha ha<\/p>\n

I know you\u2019ve had the chance to work with some Aussie talent, most recently you mentioned you worked on the Syndicate album, what is it you enjoy about working with new bands?<\/strong>
\nOh the fire in their eyes, I\u2019ll be a bit of a mentor with them too, I always try to feel for kids, and it\u2019s such a tough business, now more than ever.\u00a0 When I see these kids that want it, you just gotta fuckin\u2019 do it, you gotta realise that you\u2019re chances are, the window of opportunity is about that big (motions a tiny amount with his fingers) and you\u2019re gonna have to work harder than you\u2019ve ever thought you\u2019ve worked in your entire life and it ain\u2019t easy.\u00a0 People can say whatever they want about any band but getting there and pulling it off that\u2019s a whole other story, even Velvet Revolver, we went through hell to get there, we did, and we came from a cache that was pretty big.\u00a0 We still had to deliver ha ha, but I like working with new bands, I like doing a lot of different projects now and I\u2019m being given the freedom, I\u2019m not like a rich man where I\u2019m lazy, I\u2019m not like, I don\u2019t have \u2018fuck you money\u2019 You know what I mean?\u00a0 I like to work, I like to have that sort of fire in me, so I\u2019m doing different projects, I produced Cherie Currie\u2019s album that\u2019s coming out next year, for Blackheart and Billy Corgan\u2019s on that, The Veronicas from Australia are on it, Brody Dalle, Slash is on it, Duff\u2019s on it, a couple of Aussie guys played guitar and bass on it too from a band called ‘Mink’, Nick Maybury and Grant Fitzpatrick are the rhythm section.\u00a0 So that\u2019s going to come out on Blackheart, and I just produced a band in Brazil called \u2018Kiara Rocks\u2019 So I\u2019m doing a lot more producing, I have my own recording studio.<\/p>\n

So what else have you been up to?<\/strong>
\nI just did an art project called mattsorumart.com<\/a> it\u2019s called canvases of epic rhythm and just put that out as a series, kinda like an interesting collaboration with a bunch of guys, George Clinton and Bootsy Collins, Bootsy did this weird shit with him and more city scapes more photography and I did this light photography where you play drums and you create images, go to mattsorumart.com<\/a> it\u2019s a flash site so you can\u2019t go there on your iPad.\u00a0 So I\u2019ve got that out and then I\u2019m producing a film called \u2018Sunset Strip\u2019 I\u2019m an executive producer, it\u2019s a history of the strip from the 20\u2019s and 30\u2019s to the present.\u00a0 Got\u00a0 a great cast, Johnny Depp\u2019s in it, Mickey Rourke, so that\u2019s coming out next year, I\u2019ve got a lot of stuff coming out next year which I\u2019m excited about, it\u2019s all sort of been this whole year working up to jumping a whole other barrage.\u00a0 I finished a series in America called \u2018Rock Star Fantasy Camp\u2019 I played the mentor, I don\u2019t know if you saw it for VH1, that was fun, I got offered to do it, at kinda my stage in my career I\u2019m just kinda looking for fun stuff to do and different shit, so I went on there and let me do some TV stuff and see what happens there, and I was kinda vying for The Apprentice which is a big show in America, I just thought I could win that fuckin\u2019 thing, I think I\u2019m a pretty smart guy and I was like, fuck, I\u2019ll do this.<\/p>\n

I did a bunch of weird shit, I did Celebrity Ghost Stories, which I had this really great ghost story, I did Dog Whisperer for my dog, just doing weird stuff and I\u2019m kinda going through a bit of an entrepreneurial stage I\u2019m looking for creative things to do.\u00a0 I\u2019m coming out with actually a supplement line, of Omega 3 fish oils, swear to God.\u00a0 I tell you I\u2019m very close friends with Sammy Hagar, to me he\u2019s like my mentor, if I just steady Sammy Hagar, the guy lives like a king, he\u2019s got beautiful residences all over the world, he\u2019s got a place in Cabo on the beach and I\u2019m kinda like looking at the next phase of my life, like passive income, just stuff when you\u2019re making money when you\u2019re sleeping, kinda like the old days of the record business.\u00a0 My Mom would say \u2018Matt why are you still sleeping?\u2019 Mom, the record stores open, people are buying my record.\u00a0 That was the old days, now you\u2019re in a band, gotta go on the road to make money, gotta go to work, so I\u2019m coming out with this supplement line called \u2018Viking Fit\u2019 it\u2019s the cleanest fish oil from Norway, I\u2019m Norwegian, it\u2019ll be out next year.\u00a0 Omega 3, this is getting so bizarre because I\u2019m like a healthy guy now, like here\u2019s Matt talking to me saying \u2018It\u2019s the new drug\u2019 it\u2019s the best thing you can take in your life, it\u2019s best for your heart, your skin, your weight so it\u2019s going to be amazing ha ha.\u00a0 Hey I swear to God this is going to be huge ha ha ha.<\/p>\n
