Was it really 25 years ago?<\/p>\n

Baby Animals were everywhere in 1991. Twenty-five years later, their self-titled debut album remains one of the greatest Australian debuts of all time and one of the great rock records.<\/p>\n

The 25th Anniversary Deluxe Edition<\/em> features the original classic album, as well as showing Baby Animals in their natural habitat \u2013 live on stage, with a concert recorded in Boston when the band was on tour with Van Halen in 1992.<\/p>\n

Baby Animals was released in September 1991, the same month as Nirvana\u2019s Nevermind.<\/em> Baby Animals sold 600,000 copies in Australia, keeping Nevermind <\/em>(which sold 350,000) out of top spot on the Australian charts.<\/p>\n

\u201cI look back on that whole time with great affection,\u201d Suze says. \u201cIt was a really thrilling time for all of us. I always said that Baby Animals was the only band for me, and it really has been the only band for me.\u201d<\/p>\n

Baby Animals were on the road with Van Halen in America when they discovered the album had topped the Australian charts. \u201cWe were backstage, just about to go on, and our manager came up and told us we\u2019d gone to number one in Australia,\u201d Suze recalls. \u201cIt was an amazing moment.\u201d<\/p>\n

The album spent six weeks at number one.<\/p>\n

Baby Animals<\/em> was recorded at Bearsville Studios in Woodstock in America, engineered by Kevin \u2018Caveman\u2019 Shirley and produced by the legendary Mike Chapman, an Australian who found fame internationally, working with Suzi Quatro, Blondie, The Knack and The Sweet. \u201cWhen we found out he wrote \u2018Ballroom Blitz\u2019, we were sold,\u201d Dave Leslie said. \u201cWe knew he was the guy.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mike Chapman fondly recalls working with the band. \u201cSuze reminded me of very early Suzi Quatro, that bold female \u2018I\u2019m the boss\u2019 attitude.\u201d<\/p>\n

Five singles were released from the album: \u2018Early Warning\u2019, \u2018Rush You\u2019, \u2018Painless\u2019, \u2018One Word\u2019 and \u2018Ain\u2019t Gonna Get\u2019.<\/p>\n

Baby Animals<\/em> went eight times platinum in Australia and won three ARIA Awards \u2013 Best Album, Best Debut Album and Best Debut Single (\u2018Early Warning\u2019). The album was declared one of the Top 25 albums of 1992 in UK rock bible Kerrang! and the band performed \u2018Painless\u2019 on Late Night with David Letterman.<\/p>\n

But the band had little time to celebrate their success. They couldn\u2019t even go to the ARIA Awards \u2013 they were on the road with Van Halen at the time. \u201cAll I really remember is going from country to country and gig to gig,\u201d Suze smiles.<\/p>\n

Suze laughs when asked what she remembers of the Van Halen tour. \u201cI can\u2019t repeat many of the stories. There was a lot of craziness on that tour.\u201d<\/p>\n

Baby Animals<\/em> is featured in the book The 100 Best Australian Albums, with the entry stating: \u201cBaby Animals exploded on the Australian music scene with a bracing fusion of heavy metal bravura, a touch of glam dynamics and a look and a swagger \u2026 it was all perfectly captured in a great debut album \u2026 a crunching melange of primal rhythms, spitfire guitars and vocal sass.\u201d<\/p>\n

The band\u2019s manager at the time, John Woodruff, later said his biggest regret was that Baby Animals didn\u2019t become global stars. \u201cThey were just so close on that first album,\u201d John said. \u201cSuze was the biggest star out of everyone I ever had.\u201d High praise, indeed, considering that Woody also guided the careers of Savage Garden, The Angels and Diesel.<\/p>\n

But Suze has no regrets. \u201cWe achieved some great things,\u201d she says. \u201cAnd we\u2019ve still got more to do.\u201d<\/p>\n

The band\u2019s original line-up \u2013 singer\/guitarist Suze DeMarchi, guitarist Dave Leslie, bass player Eddie Parise and drummer Frank Celenza \u2013 are re-forming to play the album from start to finish at two big shows in Melbourne and Sydney.<\/p>\n
