It\u2019s what established the group as a multiplatinum industrial alternative luminary, and it catalyzed their seventh full-length album, Crazy Eyes<\/i><\/b> [Wind-up Records \/ Caroline Australia] to be released on 8th<\/sup> April, 2016.<\/p>\n

\u201cFilter is the mind,\u201d he exclaims. \u201cIt\u2019s your interpretation or my interpretation. Our thing is to look at people\u2019s unexplainable behavior and assess it, using sound. It\u2019s a way to approximate the insanity of the human condition. The reason this record is so fucking heavy and strange is it\u2019s exactly the opposite of what\u2019s popular. It\u2019s not pretty. It\u2019s not cute. It\u2019s real.\u201d<\/p>\n

Richard completely immersed himself in the process after getting off the road in support of 2013\u2019s The Sun Comes Out Tonight<\/em><\/strong>\u2014which moved over 8,500 copies first-week, 10 million streams to date and a Top 13 radio track with \u201cWhat Do You Say.\u201d<\/strong> The record gained critical acclaim, garnering attention from Loudwire, Hollywood Reporter, Fader, Rolling Stone, Blabbermouth <\/strong>and also landing high-profile commercial syncs including Diablo 3 (\u201cBurn It\u201d)<\/strong> and WWE (\u201cWhat Do You Say\u201d & \u201cBurn It\u201d).<\/strong> Their brooding cover of The Turtles\u2019 <\/strong>classic, \u201cHappy Together\u201d<\/strong> was featured in the trailer for Baz Luhrmann\u2019s<\/strong> 2012 The Great Gatsby.<\/strong><\/p>\n

In what can only be seen as a nod to Filter\u2019s<\/strong> debut, Short Bus, <\/em><\/strong>the new record Crazy Eyes<\/em><\/strong> eschews the signature wall of guitars heard on their last release and breathes with a stark, industrialized menace that\u2019s equally haunting and hypnotic.<\/p>\n

Rather than partner with a producer, he took the reins and oversaw production himself. \u201cYou recognize it\u2019s us from my aggression and singing, but the instrumentation had to change,\u201d he admits. \u201cIt wasn\u2019t about just stacking guitars like we might\u2019ve done on the last couple records. There are way more electronics and sound design.\u201d<\/p>\n

He collaborated with old friends such as the man behind 1999\u2019s seminal platinum-certified Title of Record<\/em><\/strong>, producer Ben Grosse [Thirty Seconds To Mars, Marilyn Manson], and Michael \u201cBlumpy\u201d Tuller [Nine Inch Nails<\/strong>]. He also worked closely with new band mates Oumi Kapila<\/strong> [guitar, programming], Ashley Dzerigian <\/strong>[bass], Chris Reeve<\/strong> [drums], and Bobby Miller<\/strong> [keyboards], and former FILTER<\/strong> bandmates, Johnny Radke<\/strong> and Danny Lohner<\/strong>. Mixed by Brian Virtue (Janes Addiction, Thirty Seconds to Mars, Deftones) <\/strong>and mastered by Howie Weinberg (Van Halen, Mars Volta, The White Stripes).<\/strong><\/p>\n

As a result, Richard\u2019s vision emerges with claws out on the stirring opener \u201cMother E.\u201d<\/strong> A brooding synth builds in tandem with his rasp just before a cathartic scream. Everything subsides to just voice and cello as he sings, \u201cI\u2019ve got nothing but rage to kill the pain.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s the heaviest song I\u2019ve ever written,\u201d he grins. \u201cWe\u2019ve seen people in the U.S. be as cruel as they possibly can be in the last few years. What is this phenomenon? I\u2019d never intentionally go out and hurt someone. I can\u2019t understand that mentality. My art is the only way I can communicate. We know what insanity looks like and what it is, but what does it sound like? \u2018Mother E\u2019 is what I think it sounds like.\u201d<\/p>\n

On the other end of the spectrum, the first single \u201cTake Me To Heaven\u201d<\/strong> rides a pulse-pounding gallop into an entrancing and ponderous refrain. \u201cI was looking into the eyes of my father when he was passing away, and I held his hand,\u201d Richard recalls. \u201cHe glanced at me really quickly, focused on me, had this look of gratitude, and then he slipped away. I was almost like, \u2018I hope you\u2019re going to heaven.\u2019 Scientifically, the idea doesn\u2019t make any sense to me, but if there is a heaven, take me there. That\u2019s what happened.\u201d<\/p>\n

Whether it\u2019s the resounding echo of \u201cWelcome To The Suck (Destiny Not Luck)\u201d<\/strong> or the thrash-y grind of \u201cKid Blue From The Short Bus, Drunk Bunk<\/strong>,\u201dCrazy Eyes<\/em><\/strong> continuously shapeshifts, maintaining a marked intensity throughout. The fans got to experience this firsthand with the launch of FILTER<\/strong>\u2019s PledgeMusic campaign, which was run in conjunction with Wind-up Records, for the album. Richard would regularly update them on studio progress and even preview ideas, giving the band\u2019s diehard audience unprecedented access.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe people who believe in the music become a part of the process,\u201d he says. \u201cThat\u2019s amazing. It\u2019s like the fans get the chance to give you their seal of approval before they\u2019ve even heard it. It was a lot of great feedback. We cut out the middle man and established a direct line of communication.\u201d<\/p>\n

It\u2019s just another step on a career defined by smashing boundaries. In 1995, FILTER<\/strong> emerged as one of industrial\u2019s most vibrant, vivid, and vitriolic voices on Short Bus. The record introduced the world to the immortal \u201cHey Man Nice Shot\u201d<\/strong> and eventually went platinum. Title of Record<\/em><\/strong> would reach the same heights on the fuel of singles \u201cTake A Picture\u201d<\/strong> and \u201cWelcome to the Fold\u201d<\/strong> as following albums The Amalgamut<\/em><\/strong> [2002], Anthems for the Damned<\/em><\/strong> [2008], and The Trouble with Angels <\/em><\/strong>[2010] would see them continue to evolve. Along the way, they\u2019d receive high-profile placements, including \u201c(Can\u2019t You) Trip Like I Do\u201d<\/strong> with The Crystal Method<\/strong> on The Spawn Soundtrack<\/strong>. Most recently the album, The Sun Comes Out Tonight<\/em><\/strong>(2013) drew critical and peer acclaim with Nine Inch Nails\u2019 Trent Reznor<\/strong> even taking to Twitter to proclaim his admiration.<\/p>\n

Ultimately, it all comes back to the fact that Richard remains honest. \u201cI\u2019m completely into this for the music,\u201d he leaves off. \u201cBeing yourself is the most important thing. I authentically went places I\u2019d never gone before. That was from my heart. I\u2019m trying to be as genuine as possible to what\u00a0FILTER<\/strong> is. It\u2019s about sounding fucking different, forward, and original.\u201d<\/p>\n
