Sony Music Entertainment Australia is proud to announce legendary guitarist, JOE SATRIANI<\/strong>, is set to release his 15<\/span>th<\/span><\/sup> solo studio album SHOCKWAVE SUPERNOVA<\/em><\/strong> on Friday July 24<\/span>th<\/span><\/sup>. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

It would be easy to call SHOCKWAVE SUPERNOVA<\/em><\/strong> a \u2018masterpiece\u2019<\/em> or \u2018the last word on guitar\u2019<\/em> from the world\u2019s most commercially successful solo guitar performer.\u00a0 Satriani<\/strong>, however, sees it much more personally. He has consistently advanced the artistry of the instrument; an effort he dedicated himself to on September 18, 1970, the day his idol Jimi Hendrix <\/strong>died. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Recorded late last year at Skywalker Sound in Lucas Valley, CA, Satriani<\/strong> assembled the dynamic trio of world-class musicians who had recently been part of his global tour; renowned keyboardist and guitarist Mike Keneally<\/strong>, a veteran of several Satriani<\/strong> outings and recordings; along with drumming whiz Marco Minnemann<\/strong> and bass extraordinaire Bryan Beller<\/strong>. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI couldn\u2019t have asked for a better band to help bring these songs to life\u201d,<\/em> says Satriani.<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The album also sees Satriani<\/strong> once again joining forces co-producer and engineer John Cuniberti.<\/strong> Satriani <\/strong>and Cuniberti<\/strong> share production on SHOCKWAVE SUPERNOVA<\/em><\/strong>, as they have on numerous albums. Their shared history dates back to the guitar star\u2019s 1986 debut album, NOT OF THIS EARTH<\/em><\/strong> and its follow-up, the platinum-selling, critically acclaimed SURFING WITH THE ALIEN<\/em><\/strong>.<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Minnemann<\/strong> and Beller<\/strong> handle the bulk of SHOCKWAVE SUPERNOVA\u2019s <\/em><\/strong>rhythmic duties, <\/em>with the exception of four tracks – the driving \u2018Keep On Movin\u2019\u2019<\/em><\/strong>, full of wondrous Satriani guitar wizardry and Keneally\u2019s <\/strong>playful piano, \u2018In My Pocket\u2019<\/em><\/strong>, a deliciously greasy, souped-up take on Swing, along with \u2018Crazy Joey\u2019<\/em><\/strong> (a deliriously effervescent romp) and \u2018Scarborough Stomp\u2019 <\/em><\/strong>(a relentless upbeat rocker) \u2013 find Satriani <\/strong>joined by another powerhouse rhythm section: the esteemed drummer Vinnie Colaiuta <\/strong>(whose work includes the likes of Frank Zappa, Sting, Paul Simon<\/strong>, among others) and Jane\u2019s Addiction<\/strong> bassist Chris Chaney<\/strong> (whose resume includes Alanis Morrisette, Celine Dion <\/strong>and Rob Zombie<\/strong>, to name a few). <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Recently, during the final performance of his two-year \u2018Unstoppable Momentum\u2019<\/em> tour, Satriani <\/strong>had an epiphany; he found himself, \u201cplaying the guitar with my teeth an awful lot. I thought, \u2018Why are you doing this?\u2019 It\u2019s as if something else, or somebody else, was driving me to do it\u201d.<\/em> Satriani<\/strong> seized upon this moment of self-realization as the springboard and creative center for his alter ego \u2018Shockwave Supernova\u2019<\/em>, the outlandish and extroverted \u2018performance side\u2019 of the normally shy and reserved guitar virtuoso. With this new persona as partner, Satriani <\/strong>launched his wildly ambitious 15th solo album, SHOCKWAVE SUPERNOVA<\/em><\/strong>. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

In a creative and engaging alternative venture, Satriani<\/strong>, a lifelong science fiction fan, has reached out to the future, through the medium of animation. Finally recognizing the on-stage symmetry with his alter ego allowed Satriani <\/strong>to also take a risk on this particular style of storytelling. He says, \u201cGuitarist Ned Evett<\/strong> and I have created an animated series called \u2018Crystal Planet\u2019. The actual \u2018Crystal Planet\u2019 is our very own Earth, set billions of years in the future. The hero of the show uses music generated by a unique electric guitar to travel through time while the show\u2019s characters struggle to preserve the future and past of humankind.\u201d<\/em>\u00a0 More information on \u2018Crystal Planet\u2019 <\/em>and how and where fans will view the series will be coming shortly. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
