In 1998 Refused released their iconic album\u00a0The Shape of Punk to Come<\/em><\/strong>. It was also the year that the band broke up and declared “Refused Are Fucking Dead<\/strong>“. Fourteen years later, the band reignited in 2012 for a Coachella performance. The group started contemplating new music within the first four months of the reunion tour, a process greatly aided by the fact that drummer\u00a0David Sandstr\u00f6m<\/strong>, guitarist\u00a0Kristofer Steen<\/strong>, and bassist\u00a0Magnus Flagge<\/strong>\u00a0had already been writing together informally for several years under the auspices of a new, vocal-less band.<\/p>\n

Frontman\u00a0Dennis\u00a0Lyxz\u00e9n<\/strong>\u00a0states: \u201cIt\u2019s not a reunion anymore. \u201cThis is one of the most radical things we\u2019ve ever done, both musically and lyrically<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n

Drummer\u00a0David Sandstr\u00f6m\u00a0<\/strong>adds: “Nobody wanted us to fuck with the image of the band who makes a great album and splits up. Nobody wanted us to dilute it. That actually provoked us<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n

Freedom<\/em>\u00a0explodes out of the speakers with opening track\u00a0Elektra,<\/em>\u00a0as\u00a0Lyxz\u00e9n\u00a0throat-shredding declaration that \u201cnothing has changed<\/em><\/strong>\u201d catapults Refused into the 21st century. Production for\u00a0Freedom<\/em>\u00a0was overseen by\u00a0Nick Launay<\/strong>\u00a0(Gang Of Four<\/strong>,\u00a0Public Image Ltd.<\/strong>,\u00a0Nick Cave<\/strong>, and\u00a0Arcade Fire<\/strong>.\u00a0Elektra<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0366\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>were produced and co-written by fellow Swede and long-time Refused fan\u00a0Shellback<\/strong>,\u00a0who has scored eight No. 1 hits on the Billboard Hot 100 with artists such as Taylor Swift and Pink.<\/strong><\/p>\n
