From Tour Release: Over the last ten years,\u00a0The Amity Affliction\u00a0<\/strong>have become one of Australia\u2019s most respected and beloved bands. Armed with a party attitude and a staunch work ethic, they have emerged as leaders in the Australian hardcore scene.\u00a0 Their last album\u00a0Chasing Ghosts\u00a0<\/em>comfortably claimed #1 spot on the Australian ARIA album chart upon debut, is now certified gold and continuing to amass the adoration of the public as the band tour relentlessly in its honour. Amity will return to home shores this October to share the stage with Utah\u2019s metalcore guns\u00a0Chelsea Grin, Orange County melodic hardcore gurus\u00a0Stick To Your Guns, as well as local up-and-comers\u00a0In Hearts Wake.<\/p>\n

We had a chat with Joel from The Amity Affliction about touring, new music and what\u2019s next for the band\u2026<\/p>\n

2013 has been a busy one for you guys, have you had any time to stop and take a breath yet?<\/strong>
\nYeah, funnily enough we have though it\u2019s been pretty relaxed, we\u2019ve had a fair bit of time off as we\u2019ve done the festival runs in Australia which are pretty easy because it\u2019s like weekend work, pretty cruisy for us, but next year already looks hectic.<\/p>\n

It seems to have been Festival season for you, and such a varied bunch too\u2026 so looking back, can you give us one word to describe your time at:<\/strong>
\nSoundwave \u2013<\/strong> Hectic.
\nGroovin\u2019 the Moo \u2013<\/strong> ooh\u2026 different.
\nVans Warped \u2013<\/strong> I need two words, that was an emotional rollercoaster.<\/p>\n

On Warped, how were the shows over there recently?<\/strong>
\nThey were really good or they were really, really bad, but we didn\u2019t seem to have any inbetweeners. They were mostly good which is great of course.<\/p>\n

Everyone OK now? I know Ryan had to come home and you were unwell, is everything cool now?<\/strong>
\nYeah everything\u2019s fine as of now, I don\u2019t think Ryan has recovered full vision as of yet, but I mean other than that he\u2019s good *laughs* and I\u2019m fine, I just had to stop drinking, which I\u2019ve done, so it\u2019s fine. It had to happen one day didn\u2019t it.<\/p>\n

How has your popularity grown as you continue to tour the States?<\/strong>
\nIt grows fairy significantly each time we go back, can\u2019t complain, it was really tough the first few tours. The first tour was actually horrendous but funny, like really, really bad, but that\u2019s how it is over there. Those kids kinda need a little more drilling to get into things than Australian kids, they really need to spell it out. They either all jump on something instantly or it takes them a little while for them to pick up on it, but I feel like when it takes them a little while they appreciate it more as a lot of bands just come around for a year or two and they\u2019re out of there. We\u2019re lucky enough to not be in that bracket.<\/p>\n

So did you notice a huge difference from this time compared to the first time, was there more people that actually knew your stuff or did they just come to check you out?<\/strong>
\nYeah, we had cut outs in our songs where the whole crowd was singing along, it was pretty amazing, a good experience.<\/p>\n

You\u2019re hitting the road back in Australia this October, what can fans expect this time around?<\/strong>
\nI think we\u2019re going to play some old songs and we\u2019re going to play a bit longer than we usually do, so that\u2019s good, and I\u2019ll be fit, so more energy from me. *laughs*<\/p>\n

It\u2019s a pretty cool line-up too, have you toured with the bands that you\u2019re bringing on tour with you?<\/strong>
\nWe\u2019ve actually been kind of friends with the singer from Chelsea Grin since we did our first tour of America, just because he was super nice and we just got a long with them, so they\u2019ve always been on our radar. Then Stick To Your Guns are a really good hardcore band and In Hearts Wake are friends of ours, so it all just came together pretty easily. Nice and diverse as well I think.<\/p>\n

Chasing Ghosts has been out for almost a year now, have you had any time to write new material?<\/strong>
\nWe\u2019re writing at the moment and we\u2019ll be heading into the studio in January.<\/p>\n

When would you think we could expect to hear a new album?<\/strong>
\nI don\u2019t know, I think everyone will have to wait a bit. We\u2019re going to record and mix it and then just sit on it for a while, make some film clips and tour overseas and then come back and tour it over here.<\/p>\n

Do you feel there\u2019s any pressure in following up \u2018Chasing Ghosts\u2019 or is it a case of fuck you everyone, we\u2019ll do what we want?<\/strong>
\nNo *laughs* there\u2019s definitely pressure, that\u2019s unavoidable but what do you do? You can\u2019t do anything about it, you\u2019ve just got to suck it up and hope for the best, but every album we\u2019ve written has been better than the last, so I\u2019m not worried, it is stressful but I\u2019m not concerned that we don\u2019t have it in us to write a better record.<\/p>\n

And it did go to number one so where do you go from there?<\/strong>
\nWell we can\u2019t go anywhere, I\u2019d be surprised if we had another number one, but hey, I was surprised about the first one. *laughs*<\/p>\n

At almost ten years with the band now, what stands out for you as a moment that can\u2019t be beaten in terms of being in the band?<\/strong>
\nThat\u2019s a tough one, that keeps changing, currently I\u2019d say Warped Tour, but I know that\u2019s going to get surpassed at some point, it\u2019s really, really tough to say that one. There\u2019s so many things, especially when you\u2019re lucky enough to do this as a job it\u2019s a pretty amazing life *laughs* so hard to pinpoint something like that.<\/p>\n

What do you see then as being the biggest evolution within the band during this time?<\/strong>
\nI think we\u2019ve just matured as far as musicianship goes, and our approach to writing is a lot more fluid now, I don\u2019t know how other bands do it but we\u2019ve got a definite style that we\u2019re sticking to when we write our music and the way everyone approaches recording and stuff like that. So I think that\u2019s been something that has definitely grown, especially from the earlier days of \u2018High Hopes\u2019 and stuff like that. If we had that situation arise now that would be the end of us *laughs* as none of us could take it, it was just so amateurish I guess, but that\u2019s part of growing as a band, you can\u2019t just be professional from the get go.<\/p>\n

What about inspiration wise, what\u2019s been hitting you over the last year or so?<\/strong>
\nWell geez, I don\u2019t know, nearly dying is going to get a bit of a mention on the next record, yeah music wise there\u2019s lots of new hardcore coming out, other than that I listen to old music, read books and watch documentaries, so I don\u2019t know.<\/p>\n

There seems to be bands that come and go at the moment, so how have you seen the Australian hardcore scene change within the life of The Amity Affliction?<\/strong>
\nI guess that\u2019s the curse of bands doing it for the wrong reasons, I\u2019ve seen a lot of bands come and go that have been like \u201cWe\u2019re going to be fuckin huge!\u201d and that\u2019s not why you do it, and then they go on and that\u2019s that. As far as hardcore goes I\u2019m still listening to the same bands that I\u2019ve been listening to for ten years, so it\u2019s hard for me to say, I don\u2019t really keep my ear to the ground. If a friend tells me about a new band from over here I\u2019ll listen to it, but that\u2019s about it for me, I don\u2019t really go to shows any more as when you play over one hundred and fifty a year that kind of gets old. *laughs*I mean I watched Defeater every day at warped and letlive. and I watched Architects I did the watching there, I mean if I\u2019m at a show I watch but I don\u2019t really go out of my way anymore to get to them.<\/p>\n

Other than the Australian dates, what does the rest of the year have in store for the band?<\/strong>
\nWe\u2019ve got Europe then Australia and then we\u2019re getting really stuck into writing the next record. It\u2019s the longest period we\u2019ve had to write a CD, so it should be good. We really don\u2019t want to fuck it up, it\u2019s a very important record for us.<\/p>\n

Well we can\u2019t wait to hear it\u2026<\/strong>
\nI can\u2019t wait to hear it *laughs* I\u2019m probably my own biggest fan for two weeks after we finish recording and then I get over it, but it\u2019s always nice, it\u2019s like hearing a new band.<\/p>\n
