Now this may shock a lot of people but this is in fact the first Rush album I’ve ever listened to. Yeah. I know right? So here’s me losing my virginity to their newest album and well, their nineteenth, titled \u2018Clockwork Angels\u2019 Here’s hoping I can get this band, this album and this prog rock concept that has made Rush who they are for approx. 55 years I think it is\u2026 I kid, I kid because I don\u2019t know Rush that well.\u00a0 Ha ha I just looked it up, it\u2019s actually 44 years, wow, I knew they\u2019d been around for a while but that\u2019s just awesome.\u00a0 So, back to the album\u2026 Within moments of the opening track and first single \u2018Caravan\u2019 I\u2019m liking what I hear, this is some great music, I mean that in the guise of musicianship, obviously with that much time in the business you have to be good, and this is already showing me they are.<\/p>\n

I\u2019d heard that Geddy Lee\u2019s vocals were in essence \u2018grating\u2019 or \u2018annoying\u2019 to some people but I\u2019m not getting that at all, I\u2019m digging it.\u00a0 Two tracks in at a total of 11 minutes I get the feeling I\u2019ll be here for the next three hours but it doesn\u2019t feel like that long in listening, the songs are smooth and just there.\u00a0 They don\u2019t drag, there\u2019s no indulgence, they\u2019re just well created.\u00a0 I\u2019m absolutely loving the title track at this very second, that being \u2018Clockwork Angels\u2019 what a classy song, I think the only thing it was missing was a tambourine break.\u00a0 I loved that one.\u00a0 Oh but wait, hello \u2018The Anarchist\u2019 you sound pleasing to my ears\u2026 and in conclusion of that track, yes you were in fact pleasing.\u00a0 I mentioned before I\u2019m not too up on the prog rock scene but five tracks in and ninety minutes down, I get it, I like it.\u00a0 OK, what else have you got Rush?<\/p>\n

Hold the phone, a 3:14 song?\u00a0 Is this a radio track?\u00a0 Did they run out of prog?\u00a0 Here\u2019s me just saying how much I like the lengthy tracks and you go and give me this?\u00a0 A great song called \u2018Halo Effect\u2019 that should\u2019ve been 12 minutes longer?\u00a0 That was actually a truly great song, almost power ballad-esque if you can say that.\u00a0 You know, for a three piece band, Rush kinda kick ass, these chunky riffs and driving drum and bass lines all complement each other. It\u2019s fun to be sitting here rockin\u2019 along to these tunes, oops just caught myself humming along to \u2018Seven Cities of Gold\u2019 I like this one, has a very 70\u2019s style groove to it.\u00a0 Then we jump straight to a more upbeat track called \u2018The Wreckers\u2019 can\u2019t fault it, won\u2019t fault it.\u00a0 I always know I like a song when I make up the video for it in my head and this one had that ability to do that.\u00a0 Oh and it\u2019s a good video, it had a Viking in it.<\/p>\n

\u2018Headlong Flight\u2019 was the second single lifted from the album and you can hear why, that was a beast of a track at just over seven minutes, you got the best of everything and more.\u00a0 A short interlude for \u2018BU2B2\u2019 and now only two tracks to go\u2026 \u2018Wish Them Well\u2019 is killer, musically I\u2019m totally loving the underlying guitar progression in the track, it hits a groove that works so well, with a great solo piece mid song once again showcasing the bands\u2019 talents.\u00a0 I\u2019d almost put this as my favourite on the album, yeah I know, big call this late in, but I\u2019m calling it.\u00a0 The last track would want to be something pretty special I tell ya\u2026<\/p>\n

So here we have the closer, \u2018The Garden\u2019 and at exactly seven minutes long, wouldn\u2019t have been my choice for the last track, it\u2019s a very mellow driven song, it\u2019s good, but not my favourite.\u00a0 I really would\u2019ve loved that punch to take us out, although I love the piano in it, I feel like I\u2019ve gone out on a ballad, was pumped up for the whole thing and in the end I\u2019m mellowed out.\u00a0 Oh Ok, here we go, guitar solo, it\u2019s getting better but still, I sit by my comments of the mellowness.<\/p>\n

OK, so, 7 hours later it\u2019s dinner time now, best be off\u2026 in summary, I enjoyed my first Rush experience, I can see why they\u2019ve been around for so long and will be for much longer.\u00a0 Clockwork Angels, yeah, check it out.<\/p>\n
