Having received nods from Triple J Unearthed and RAGE, the band wasted no time in hitting the road with respected acts such as The Red Paintings, Over:Reactor and Greenthief.

Aerials debut EP drops on May 1, supported by a massive run of sweaty shows all the way from Cairns to Adelaide. With Forrester Savell (Dead Letter Circus, Karnivool) manning the desk, lead single ‘Firefights’ is a rock anthem in rave territory as M83-inspired falsettos float over Depeche Mode-esque synth stabs.

Entertaining an audience of over 1,000 punters at iconic Brisbane venue The Arena started what is sure to be a very exciting year for Aerials. This band will stop at nothing to carve a place of their own in a musical landscape over saturated with carbon-copy indie bands.

We dug the sound of these guys, so wanted to share and make Aerials one of our Best Things You’ve Never Heard… we caught up with singer Jackson to fill us in on a little about the band…

Let’s start with the basics; can you please give us the abridged version of the Aerials story and where the name of the band came from?
Aerials is two brothers who have been playing music together since they were in nappies and an only child who had been playing on his lonesome for not quite as long. Our first show was a single launch for ‘Silhouettes’ in March 2012. Since then we’ve toured three singles. We get on the road any opportunity we get.

We had 3 simple criteria for band name selection: (1) it had to really really hard to find on the internet; (2) it had to be likely to get us in a legal dispute within 6 months of getting off the ground; and (3) it had to be likely to be misspelt by the vast majority of people. So we chose ‘Aerials’. Check, check and check.

Can you now please introduce each other and give us a rock ‘n’ roll fact or myth about each of you?
Brendan (drums) insists on speaking in a southern American accent at rehearsals and calling himself ‘gospel chops’. Tristan (guitar) spends almost as much money on fancy Asian hair product as he does guitar pedals. And I (vox/bass) apparently refuse to wear clothes when tracking vocals.

If you had to give us your best door to door sales pitch to convince someone to listen to your forthcoming debut EP before they slam the door in your face, what do you say to them?
I would have walked away before they had the chance to slam the door in my face. Errrgh, wanting people to actually like your music is so passé.

In terms of your song writing, what do you consider to be the most important ingredients that make up an Aerials song?
Big lifts. We argue for hours about dynamics. If a song doesn’t take us to at least five different places in three minutes, then it needs more work.

Both lyrically and musically, what or who inspires/influences your music the most?
I write lyrics free flow and work out what they mean after they’re written. It’s an unconscious stream brought on by listening to the demo of the music on repeat. This is the only way I write.

Musically, I’m influenced mainly by post-rock music. Tristan and Brendan are both avid music collectors and draw from a huge range of sources. Brendan, whom writes most of the original ideas for our songs, also reckons he’s inspired by soundtracks, but I reckon he just says that to sound hip.

Newest single ‘Firefights’ is a powerhouse, is there a story behind the song you can share with us?
That song was the last one written in pre-production. We tagged it as the lead single before it even had a vocal! I guess we just loved the way that rhythm made us feel. When Brendan showed us the original midi demo he did we were sold straight up.

Touring wise you’re about to head off for some shows in support of the EP throughout Australia, tell us about your live show and what people can expect if they come to see you play?
The live show is everything for us. We are a rock band. We put every single part of ourselves into our performance. I feel very fortunate to play music with two such natural performers. I feed off them and just try to lose myself in the music.

What do you think that Aerials do to stand out from the, as you put it, ‘carbon copy indie bands’?
Ha! You read our bio, Mmmm. I bet we’ve offended a lot of people with that comment hey? Blame our publicist. Nah. We have loads of friends who play in indie bands… we are playing with a lot of them on tour upcoming tour. I guess we’d just like to think that we take our audience on a more emotive journey than a lot of the tracks that are dominating radio at the moment.

You’ve been doing the rounds for a couple of years now, how have you already seen the band evolve in the time from when you started?
Well, we’ve actually only been playing just over a year. Soooo you just skim-read the bio! We’re just trying to be our own favourite band. Cliché, but what else are you meant to do as a rock band? We’re working harder than any other emerging band I know. This band is our lives and it evolves every day, mostly in a forward direction. The shows are getting bigger, and that’s the part of the evolution that we care most about.

For a bit of fun, say you get the chance to open for any artist in the world, who would they be and why?
I’d say The National or Sigur Ros. Brendan and Tristan would probably say The Mars Volta, at a time when that would’ve been possible of course.

To get a little further insight into the band, let’s say you were able to cover one song for your live set what would it be and why?
We actually play one cover every set we play. The only criteria is that the original is by a woman…. It’s just easier to ‘make it your own’ that way. We’re doing Santigold’s ‘Disparate Youth’ on the upcoming tour.

Lastly, here’s a chance to gaze into your crystal ball. In the next year, Aerials will:
…cease to exist after the realisation that the only thing cooler than not wanting people to like your music is breaking up before anyone knows who you are. Our retirement will be spent sitting around naked and applying hair product to each other while singing Cyndi Lauper covers and reminiscing about how much we use to love indie music. Buuuut, before all this happens, we are touring our debut EP Firefights absolutely everywhere. So come to a show, even if it’s just to laugh at me when I mangle that ridiculously hard bass line in Disparate Youth.

Doing the rounds of Sydney for quite some time now, Devine Electric have been a band that we’ve featured before on the site, and their no nonsense rock and roll has been a favourite by many in the scene with a live show that is loud and proud and a sound reminiscent of that late 70’s early 80’s rock which is a damn good thing in my book.

With a new three track EP and a more matured sound in my opinion, these songs show that the band is evolving and continuing to grow as song writers with more maturity in the songs and a vibe that makes you want to listen to them more than once. Opener ‘Sweet Temptation’ is smooth, melodic and throws me back to the music I still love to this day, with some great arrangements musically, I’m a huge fan of the underlying guitars throughout this one and look forward to checking this one out live.

‘So Sexual’ is just that… it’s sleazy and a perfect show opener in my opinion and this song rocks out in a Motley Crue ‘Ten Seconds To Love’ kind of way, with gang vocals and guitar solos, you really can’t go wrong. Vocally, singer Eli nails this one and if this was released in 1987 you wouldn’t have ever heard the end of this song in Hollywood, in fact this is where it should be, this band would kick ass in L.A. and here’s hoping one day they will.

Last track on the EP ‘Don’t Feel Like Home’ sees shades of G’n’R, well , what G’n’R should be now but aren’t anymore. This one hits a groove that has you slithering and is my favourite of the three tracks, especially when the solo kicks in, man, if more bands wrote songs like this, the world would once again be ruled by rock and with this, hopefully Devine Electric along with some other great Aussie rock bands that are out there will help get the country back on track musically, now, to help get it heard by more, and with forthcoming supports of Lita Ford and Gilby Clarke, this is a damn good start.

A great effort and I can’t wait to see what’s next for these guys… May the Rock be with You, Devine Electric…

Diesel has been a part of the Australian music scene for over twenty years now and tonight we get to see a special side of him was he gives us a solo & select show, and part of it involving a tailored set allowing the crowd to choose the set via fliers filled out before the show where you select a track. Let’s see if my choice makes it in a bit later…

Tonight opening the show is Tim Chaisson who is back in Australia for what feels like the 37th time in the last couple of years and his return is more than welcome. Instantly silencing the crowd with his voice he mesmerized the Vanguard and it didn’t stop there. His new album ‘The Other Side’ is so good and hearing songs from it include newest single ‘Bail You Out’ which is such a great track that really should be heard by many. Busting out the fiddle and playing it like a guitar for ‘Here Tonight’ and looping it as he shows off his talent on the instrument. ‘The Healing’ as endorsed by Leann Rimes (via Twitter) is a perfect ballad but he speeds it back up with ‘Speak Easier’ and the acoustic rock vibe is alive. With a track co-written with Colin from The Trews ‘Come Clean’ is one of those songs that when heard acoustic takes on a whole new feeling from the full band version on the album and it was a standout tonight. I really wish more people knew about Tim as he is a talent and should really be noticed and here’s hoping that’ll happen one day soon on a much bigger scale. ‘The Other Side’ is the title track from his new album and is a perfect lead in to another fiddle track, this time instrumental and once again with the use of loops. Closing out his set with a cover of Paul Kelly’s ‘Leaps and Bounds’ with crowd sing along included and I think a few new fans tonight. See you soon Tim.

Diesel takes the stage, picks up a guitar and it’s on… Opening with ‘Darling of the Universe’ which really shows you how well this man can sing, not to mention plahy the guitar but that kind of goes without saying. The harmonica gets a run for a simply outstanding version of ‘Soul Revival’ and hearing it played this way just gave it a whole new life and meaning. For a song that’s almost twenty five years old, that is no mean feat. ‘All Come Together’ had everyone clapping on the 2 and 4, as ‘Days Like These’ gets booties shaking and then the first cover of the night which is the Bobbie Gentry track ‘Ode to Billie Joe’ is more blues than clues and rocks the joint. He takes it back down a few notches to give a truly soulful version of ’15 feet of snow’ and the room is dead silent, in awe at times, and me one of those in said awe. Another cover, this time taken from ‘Midnight Cowboy’ – ‘Everybody’s Talkin’ and it was a great version truly made his own. So far this is an amazing night of talent and live music to be a part of.

Another round of blues as the slide comes out for a completely changed up version of ‘Don’t Need Love’ which reinvented is a completely different song, and what a song… Now I loved the ‘Flesh & Wood’ album that Jimmy Barnes did, and from it ‘Still Got a Long Way to go’ that Diesel played on and actually hearing this for the first time in almost twenty years for me was something else . Throwing in a Muddy Waters song ‘Hoochie Coochie Man’ and tonight Muddy was channelled, as Diesel worked his way through this blues number and giving us a first real taste of a guitar solo as he ripped through this one. This man can play the blues.

‘Come To Me’ gets us back on the Diesel train and has everyone singing along and following it up with ‘Never Miss Your Water’ which really does show us how good this man is on the guitar. When the songs are stripped down to this point you really get to hear the structure of them and this one really shows that. We’re just getting hit after hit now and ‘Tip of my Tongue’ gets the biggest reaction yet and deserved too as the ladies down the front are up dancing. Diesel is joined by Tim Chaisson on fiddle to play out this one and what a perfect fit for this one. As Diesel leaves the stage, will he back? That’s the question.

Yes is the answer. Diesel returns with Tim to play a song for us that they wrote together and what a nice little ditty that was and hope it sees the light of day in one way, shape or form. Strapping the strat back on for a Hendrix track, namely ‘Hey Joe’ (not the one I chose) but wow, justice was given and no guitars were hurt in the playing of this song. ‘Cry In Shame’ is the perfect way to end the show with an extend version full of solos leaving everyone walking out happy after a night of so much talent and great music. Truly enjoyable and an artist well worth seeing should you get the chance.

Melbourne favourites The Smith Street Band have been busy; they really don’t know how to be anything else. As well as working on a batch of new tunes, they’ve put together an Australian tour, enlisting Poison City Weekender pals Joyce Manor (USA) and Cheap Girls (USA), who will both be making their first trip to Oz.

It has been an amazing few weeks; TSSB’s biggest ever headliner (Melbourne’s Corner Hotel) SOLD OUT in just five days. The ‘Sunshine & Technology’ album placed at at #13 in No Heroes Magazine’s Top 50 Australian Heavy Albums Of All Time, raving ‘few albums make life seem this special’, and the lads announced a month-long, inaugural tour of the UK and Europe, plus a slot on the line-up for the famous ‘Fest’ in Gainesville, Florida. This tour is your last chance to catch The Smith Street Band before they venture overseas to see all the places and make all the friends with their infectious, lyrically striking, hook-laden punk/rock tunes. All 10 shows through August and September are going to be colossal. And, as punters can expect from The Smith Street Band, tickets are as cheap as possible for this tantalizing team-up…

JOYCE MANOR (USA) play the kind of boisterous punk rock that The Smith Street Band subscribe to, and they tour just as hard. The Torrence, California foursome believe in strong pop sensibilities and gigantic hooks, and with two albums and a bunch of EP’s under their belts, they’re firing. Direct from FYF Fest in LA, there will be fists and feet in the air when Joyce Manor join the tour. Watch ‘em play ‘Constant Headache’ and ‘Leather Jacket’ live at Fest and get gee’d up here.

CHEAP GIRLS (USA) are three friends from Landsing, Michigan who love writing downbeat indie rock, jammed with lyrical deftness. They’ve released records on Paper + Plastick and Rise Records and their third album was produced by the amazing Laura Jane Grace of Against Me! She says they sound like The Replacements, Sugar and early Smoking Popes, and we agree. Get their vibe here, or watch the video for ‘Ruby’.

Help The Smith Street Band show their new friends why they love touring Australia so much. Prepare for some joyous parties that will leave you with a grin on your face and a fire in your belly. Tix on sale Tues May 21.

“When we started, it was clear to us from the very beginning that we want to work hard and we want to work a lot to get where we are as a band and move forward, but if you’re within that it’s more like taking one step after another, in that sense, everything that we ever did is important to us in some way and everything was just like one little step, one of like a billion steps… *laughs*”

From tour press release: Forming in 2002, Eluveitie have refined themselves over the years into a fine art that incorporates traditional death metal elements and mixes them seamlessly with European folk instruments such as flutes, hurdy-gurdies, violin, bagpipes, fiddles, mandolin and pipes. And with most of the lyrics sung in an ancient Gaulish tongue, the overall effect is mesmerizing, sweeping and grandiose.

They consistently produce unique and entertaining live shows around the world continually gaining rave reviews for their stage presence, energy, articulate sound and amazing way of drawing you into their world.

Bang your head to the heavy parts, whisk yourself away to an ancient land via the searing melodies of the pipes and flutes and jig with your stein in hand when the hurdy-gurdy comes crashing in!

We chatted to Chrigel from Eluveitie about their upcoming Australia tour as well as their latest album and the evolution of the band and just why we shouldn’t categorize the band…

You’re headed to Australia for the very first time in May for some shows, now being your first time, for those that wouldn’t have seen you perform live before, can you describe a typical Eluveitie show…
Well to be honest I’ve never been to one so it’s a little hard to say, but what I read at least in the magazines about our shows is that apparently Eluveitie shows are pretty much energetic, there’s a lot of energy there of course because of what we feel on stage, but I think what makes it a little special is what you hear on an Eluveitie album is what you get at an Eluveitie show, so that means there are eight people on stage and we’re coming up with historical, traditional folk instruments and everything is hand made. So there’s pretty much a hell of a lot going on up on stage.

What can the fans expect to hear set wise?
Of course those shows will be a part of the ‘Helvetios’ world tour and we’re focusing on our latest album and we’ll play quite a lot of songs off that album, but of course especially since it’s our first time in Australia, we’ll try and give a good mix all across our discography.

Having eight members in the band must be a tight squeeze on stage, how do you make sure you’re not all falling over each other?
*laughs* Well usually you’re doing fine, I don’t hope that the stages are that small *laughs* but we’re fine.

‘Helvetios’ was released just over a year ago and was the band’s first concept album, what was the idea behind the concept and creating this album?
First of all, I have to say ‘Helvetios’ music is basically the narrative of Celtic history and so this is what we’ve been doing on all our albums. As you said correctly this is our first concept album in the sense that it has a continuing story line and I think it originally decided that the album tells the story of the Gaulish wars and that was pretty much a dark chapter in Celtic history, sadly they are an important chapter in Celtic history. We thought it was worth writing songs about, it was worth singing about that and that became why we came up with the idea. Song writing wise it’s with Eluveitie our songwriting is pretty much the same because it’s a pretty much a natural process with all the information, but nevertheless it was a little different this time, because we didn’t want to only express it lyrically but also express it musically, so what we tried to create was almost a little soundtrack to that story.

There was a little bit of a change with Anna getting more lead vocals on this album, was that something that needed to be done to make the songs what they were?
To be honest that was a conscious decision actually and I don’t think it’s changed, it’s always been like that, since our debut there have always been songs that are like that. There have always been songs that mainly consist of female vocals that are a little softer and all that, it is a little Eluveitie tradition, but it’s not the same stamp on every album, this is not something we decide per se, in writing the music for Eluveitie, I implement the certain instruments the way that it deserves the songs the best, I also consider the human voice an instrument. Like when I was writing the song ‘Alesia’ for the latest album it just turned out to be clear from the very beginning that there has to be female vocals just to express what the song is about and capture the atmosphere of what the song should express, so it’s an expression of song writing, rather than the idea that we just want to have more female vocals on an album or stuff like that.

How hard was it in the beginning to blend all the elements and instruments you guys use into the sound that became that of the band?
To be honest it’s pretty much exactly what it is today since day one, when I formed the band it was basically the realization of a dream that I had which was to combine the two types of music that I love most which would be melodic death metal and traditional Celtic folk music, so also ten years ago when I formed the band it was absolutely perfectly clear which instruments should be involved and it was clear that someone should be playing the hurdy gurdy. In that sense there wasn’t that much of a development, obviously it did develop musically and all that, but instrument wise and music wise it was pretty clear from the beginning that this is what we were doing.

How does the term ‘Folk Metal’ sit with you as it seems you were the pioneers for this ‘genre’?
I guess you want an honest answer here… but actually we don’t even care that much. Putting labels on our music is not our job, it’s the job of journalists and I don’t know, we just play our music, after all it’s just fucking rock and roll. After ten years when this music has come up more and more there has been so many different descriptions, especially in Europe. Actually we don’t care what we’re described as, or if it’s like something influences or not, we just want to play music. As long as we can do that and we’re happy, we don’t care much about anything else.

At over ten years as a band, what has been your career highlight to date?
Well it’s hard to say, of course I could mention our newest album which was the first time entering the US Billboard charts, or the second last album which was our first album to land in the Finnish album charts at top five. From the outside there may seem like certain key points in a career or you may think this album was their breakthrough or stuff like that, but here in the band it doesn’t seem that way. When we started, it was clear to us from the very beginning that we want to work hard and we want to work a lot to get where we are as a band and move forward, but if you’re within that it’s more like taking one step after another, in that sense, everything that we ever did is important to us in some way and everything was just like one little step, one of like a billion steps… *laughs*

Now with the ten years, comes a release of ‘The Early Years’ with the re-recorded ‘Ven EP’ and your first album ‘Spirit’ re-mastered, why was now the right time to release this?
There was two reasons as to why we did that, on one hand both of those releases have been sold out for maybe three years or something like that and have not been available anymore, and we suggested why don’t we re-release it? We thought it was a little cheesy or boring to simply re-release it, and a little cheap we thought, so we said if we were going to re-release it that we should do something with it. Then there was the other factor that it was our tenth anniversary and we wanted to do something special and all those things just came together and we thought it was cool, even though some of those on ‘Ven’ we still play live these days, yet as we developed as a band those songs developed together with us during the past ten years. So we thought it would be cool and interesting to record them again and see what they sound like today. So that was the idea behind the whole thing.

Have you already been writing for the next studio album?
Yes and no, we started the touring cycle for ‘Helvetios’ more than a year ago, and that one will still keep up on the road until at least September this year, it will be close to a two year tour, but after this once the tour is over in September, we actually do have a break from touring to focus on new material. I can gather ideas and stuff but I’m not the person that can actually compose music on tour. I tried to do it but I just can’t, I need quiet and can go out for a walk in the forest to write music, so I started working on the concept of it will be after September when the tour is finished and I can focus on new material and maybe at the end of this year or something like that.

You mentioned that the tour is up until September, where are you heading to after Australia?
I think the next stop after Australia will be China or Taiwan, I’m not sure anymore *laughs*

Is there anywhere you want to play yet that you still want to?
We’re all just music junkies, as long as we can play, as long as we can hold our instruments in our hands we’re happy to play anywhere, but yes there are places, take Australia for example, it’s our first time and we can’t wait, we’re really excited to be coming there. We’re also curious about China as it’ll be our first time there too, so we’ll see.

Well thanks for your time Chrigel, we look forward to seeing you here in Australia.
Thank you, you too.

With 5 albums under their belt, each one further cementing the band’s reign as true leaders of the genre, ADTR effortlessly blend brutal breakdowns and melodic choruses, “A DAY TO REMEMBER are in earth-conquering form, and it has to be asked whether anything can stand in their way.” – Alternative Press

The new single ‘Violence (Enough is Enough)’ showcases A DAY TO REMEMBER at their pop infused metal core finest, “Aggressive, earthshattering, and yet characteristically melodic all in a single package.” – Property of Zach

Forget everything you knew about THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA. The metalcore maverics’ latest album Dead Throne signals a more evolved, more progressive THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA that is not only larger sonically, but goes much deeper, lyrically. “While modern metalcore acts are a dime a dozen now, the fourth full-length from the Devil Wears Prada should lay waste to any usurpers attempting to seize their rightful crown” – Alternative press

Having toured the USA, Asia and Europe multiple times over the past few years,

DREAM ON DREAMER have built a worldwide fanbase to the envy of most Australian bands.
Beginning at age 12, Steve Vai started taking lessons from Joe Satriani and by 18 he had begun his professional music career transcribing for, and eventually playing, recording and touring with, the legendary Frank Zappa. In 1984 Vai branched out on his own before joining Alcatrazz, David Lee Roth’s solo band and Whitesnake, quickly earning guitar superstar status and the #1 spot in guitar magazine polls. 1990 saw the release of Vai’s groundbreaking album ‘Passion and Warfare’. Drawing critical acclaim and commercial success, the album cemented Vai’s standing as one of the top guitarists in the world. Vai’s prolific creativity has built an extensive discography of more than 60 albums featuring solo works, several musical contributions to film soundtracks including the theme to Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey, as well as guesting on numerous albums by fellow artists. Most recently Vai delivered ‘The Story of Light’ (Sony Music Aust.), his 16th solo album.

In addition to his recordings, Vai has created several lines of signature guitars through Ibanez, including 1985 original JEM guitar and the first commercial seven-stringed electric guitar.
