“You never stop to doing new things, we still have a lot to say musically…….. exams never end!!!!!”

From tour release: Across the course of a career that has spanned three decades Goblin have been providing the spine tingling soundtrack to the celluloid nightmares of a generation of horror movie lovers. The Italian ensemble have become masters of a musical style full of drama, suspense and atmosphere bringing palpable fear and tension to some of the most famous horror films of all time. It is this amazing atmosphere that Goblin bring to life in their acclaimed live shows creating an audio and visual feast and a concert experience like no other.

We had Massimo from Goblin answer some questions for us before they head to Australia to play in Melbourne again and for the first time ever in Sydney. From what we’ve been told, this show is amazing and not to be missed!

Thank you for taking the time to answer some questions for us today, now for someone who isn’t aware of Goblin and your prog rock horror ways, can you describe the sound of the band and how you came up with it and why it works for Goblin?
The sound Goblin was born with us in 1972, we have always had it. In 1975 we perfected the substance of what we were always looking for and found new sounds that fit in well, this still is a continuous search. It works well for the Goblin because we are the only ones making this music with this sound.

What was it about the horror genre that enticed Goblin in the beginning?
Almost everything, starting from the effects with sighs, strong strokes of guitar, percussion sharp, special instruments never used before (bouzouki, tabla, church organ etc … etc …) and deep bass.

We’re here because you’re coming back to Australia but this will be your first time in Sydney and Perth, are you excited to bring your music to other cities in Australia?
Yes, we are very excited about this, in November 2012, when we played in Melbourne, we had a great success and we were hoping to return to play in other cities, and this has come true.

You’ll be performing Suspiria, Dawn Of The Dead, Deep Red and Roller for us, what’s the idea behind this for your choice of set?
We have a lot of songs in the setlist, in addition to the soundtracks of the films of Dario Argento and George Romero, we insert in concert also songs from our LP “Roller” and “The Fantastic Journey of Bagarozzo Mark”.

You were here last November in Melbourne, how was that experience for you?
Very exciting, I said before that we were expecting a great success, but not as great as we had it, it was a wonderful experience.

The shows sold out pretty much straight away, being your first time to Australia were you surprised by the interest?
As I said before, we did not think it would be such a big success, the Australian people has been truly wonderful.

So how would you describe a typical Goblin show to someone who has never seen you before?
A show very varied with rich sounds, pop, rock and even funk.

There have been so many changes and variations of the band over the years, how is everything now?
The important thing is that there are Massimo Morante, Claudio Simonetti (Goblin founders), and Maurizio Guarini who has been with us since 1975. The sound has always been us three, even as it evolves.

It’s been eight years since your last album, do you think we can expect any new music from Goblin soon?
Certainly we will make a new album, we already have several songs ready, but it won’t come out for a while because we are very committed to doing concerts, probably next year.

At almost forty years now as a band, what’s left to do that you haven’t yet done?
You never stop to doing new things, we still have a lot to say musically…….. exams never end!!!!!

After Australia, what does the remainder of 2013 have in store for the band?
Many other concerts all over the world, and then, as I said before, we will prepare a new CD/LP.

Thanks again for your time, best of luck with the tour and May the Rock be with You!
Thank you very much, Massimo Morante.
